What is the rough-in (the distance from the wall to the center of the waste pipe)? Standard is 12 inches. Some 10 inch rough-in toilets are smaller, but you'll need to add an offset flange to set the rough-in closer to the wall or you'll end up with a big space between the tank and the wall. I have heard that some building codes do not allow you to use offset flanges, so you should check that. Also, if your pipes are older (my house is almost 100 yrs old), you might not be able to add the flange without replacing the pipe beneath the toilet.

I need to double check on the rough in size and write back. We did change all the plumbing underneath because it was old.

Rialto would seem like your best option to me at only 25.25 inches. It also shows up on lists of best toilets to chose for small spaces, so I'm not so sure I would be overly concerned about those reviews you read.

we bought some toilet because it was small, nightmare. every time a guest used it it got clogged and ran over. no idea what they were doing in there but it never happened for another toilet. so if reviews say it clogs easily, dont choose it. if they dont like something else about it thats different.

Ok I going to amend my thoughts on the Rialto since it does seem to get particularly bad reviews....keep looking.

The first thing you need to know is the measurment to the sewer drain from the wall and that will determine the toilet you can't change that easily and it dictates the size of the toilet.

The rough in looks like 10 1/2. Here is space. They will prob use an offset flange.

So best find out if they are legal where you are in many places off set flanges are not code.Mansfield and Toto make 10" drain toilets.

Youneed a 10'' rough in toilet. Offset flanges are not allowed. Even with a shallow toilet, will it still have 21'' in front of it? Is that alcove 30'' wide? When you have a small spacetaking down walls to create better clearance is often a very good idea.

If the distance is 10.5, you don't need an offset flange for a 10" rough-in toilet, but you do need a 10" rough-in toilet. The Toto toilets that fit can fit 10 or 14" rough-ins in addition to the standard 12 use a special adaptor under the skirt of the toilet. For your purposes, that means the toilet will be the same length, regardless of the rough-in distance. If you can extend the space behind the toilet and above (so you can remove the lid among other things) by 2 inches or so, you'll find many more choices. It looks like you put in new tiles, which shortened the distance from 12 to 10.5 inches. Your tough choice now is whether to redo that work or not.

Did any one hear about American Standard Colony Fit Right Toilet with 10 inch rough in? This is the existing small powder room where we changed the old tile to a new tile to update its look. Unfortunately, because the location is in between stairs and front of the, there was no option to add some space.

You need to understand that the rough-in size does not determine the length of the toilet. You should check the specs for each toilet. The American Standard Colony with 10" rough-in is 29.5 inches long. In your case, it would extend out 30" from the wall because your hole is 10.5 inches from the wall. The Rialto, while shorter, will not fit in your space because it has a 12" rough-in. From your photos, it looks like you'll need to extend the pipe to reach the new toilet. The least expensive way to save the most space would be to use an offset flange and the Kohler Rialto. Your distance from wall to front would be 25.25". If you don't want to use an offset flange, you'll need to create a recessed space behind the toilet.

Toto will be your best bet for the largest selection of toilets that will fit a 10" rough in. Offset flanges are prohibited by the plumbing code.

I thought the dimensions on the American Standard Colony 10" rough in model 2486.010 toilet was 24 1/2 " not 29?

I checked that model number of Amazon. I think the 24.5 is the height. The third number is usually the length - 28.6. It wasn't on the American Standard website. Amazon said there is a newer version available. That one is 29.5 inches long.

Take a look at the spec sheet for American Standard Linen Cadet Pro Right Height Round-front 10-inch Round Left-lever. The description says 30 3/8 but the spec sheet shows 26.25. It may omit be available to professionals. I'd call American Standard to ask about it.

Here's a link- these toilets come from England, where there's a high need to convert small closets into powder rooms. They sell 23"-25". I have the same issue myself. Curious -what did you end up going with? I think my rough in is 12." and since it's for master bath, we want elongated. Recently found a Kohler Cimerron toilet that only has depth of 25" in Home Depot, but after reading some of the reviews from people who buy other compact toilets, I am afraid to spend the $198 it cost. Its not comething that can be returned if it doesn't work out.........any suggestions from other people who have bought compact toilets.
