Of course not - The dogs can easily the doors.

It is no different than putting your dog in a crate during crate training and much more luxurious. I don't think this is in any way cruel.

Glad to know they are spoiled, and can easily get out, I thought so, just checking...why else would you devote so much of the room to them! And to Missi...my dogs don't have to be crate trained...

I don't even have dogs and I know that it's not a matter of "have to" with crate training. Many dogs find comfort in their crates and love to get into them. This is super smart and saves thousands of dollars in grooming costs over the years. A lovely and loving use of space.

Folks...I have dogs, I have crates, but I don't crate train as in locking the dogs in the crates all day... I realize some feel the need to confine their pets like that to avoid messes and chewing. My dogs choose not to go in the crates...they've never made messes or chewed, I've been lucky. My dogs would much rather sit on my lap to feel secure...one is 55 pounds, the other is 73. Four Brothers did a great job on this set-up and now we know those dogs are never really confined, and seem to be spoiled...as they should be...

Bugbaby, I love to hear about people who treat pets well. You sound like you do. You do have a lot to learn about crate training though. It is not about locking a dog in a crate all day. In fact, that would be very counter productive to crate training! Crate training is a very useful tool in keeping a pet safe and secure. It is not a means of punishment. You never know when a time may come around when your pet needs to be confined for safety reasons to both pet and the people around them. An accident is a good example. Trying to keep a pet, especially large one, calm and comfortable when injured is important. That is not the time to try and restrain them from further injury. It is so much easier when they can be put in a spot where they are safe. Trying to put a dog in a crate when they are not used to it just adds to the stress. All dogs need a safe, quiet spot that is their own. Oh, the room is lovely by the way. (Not sure how that dog got into the upper compartment though.)

Bugbaby21- I'm sorry, but if you "thought so" why would you have made the extremely rude and judgmental comment about this being "cruel" and ask the owner why he/she has dogs? I'm happy that you have all the time in the world to let your dogs sit in your lap, but not everyone does. Some people work and crate their dogs while they're out of the house or for various other reasons Roxsol mentioned. You seem to be the type to shoot first, and ask questions later. This is not a good way to go thru life. You should probably think about working on your approach so you don't come off so... hmmm... what's the word I'm looking for? As your follow up comment suggested, who spends this kind of money on a special room for their dogs if they don't, in fact, treat them exactly like the family members they are? Normally I would just shake my head and mutter to myself about your mean comment, but today I'm sick and felt the need to respond, while 155 pounds of crate trained Great Dane warms my feet.

Not that this is about the dogs....but a very good reason to use a crate is when there is a risk that your dog could escape the home, e.g. when workers are going in and out of the home, or when a visitor is scared of your dog. Some people think it best to crate their dogs while they are away, so the dog feels secure as if they are in their bedroom, or if the home is burglarized, the dog will not get out of the house.... and not all dogs feel safe running free inside the house. Some have separation anxiety, especially as they get older. Many reasons to crate, and none necessarily cruel. The room is awesome, by the way!

Bugbaby21 use your common sense. For people to have spent so much on their beloved pets, and you to ask the question " do you lock them in there?" Belies belief.

Four Brothers - so how do the dogs get up to the top compartment? I assume they just jump up because they're larger dogs? Or is there a hidden stairway for them?
