Yes, just don't overlook anything. There are so many things to think of when building and anything you may possibly forget and add a change fee. We made some design changes and always a few things you wish you would have thought of but in the end yes, was happy and we love our home. We had a great builder that worked well with us so we were quite pleased.

I met with them and the upgrades I want are easily another 100,000. They are pretty basic but this is normal. If you want upgrades, buy a smaller home.

Not only do they charge you full blown retail, if you deduct you will only get a very small portion back in credit and they charge change order fee's for everything. At the end of the day the margins are small on the basic house package they offer and they swing for the fences on anything outside if that basic package.

Late to the game here, but I agree with millworkman. We built through TK Constructors in Ohio and deducted a woodburning fireplace and received a 600 dollar credit. I was kinda pleased with that because we were okay not having a fireplace. Well, guess what, now 4 years later my wife wants a freaking fireplace and of course, good luck adding a woodburning fireplace with proper venting for 600 bucks. LOL Sorry dear, not happening. I'll buy you an electric fireplace/tv stand.

To answer the original question, through TK, we spent about 80k in upgrades and sitework. In reality, it was probably closer to 90k because our sitework with DP&L Energy ran higher getting electric back to the house. The base plan we chose was $134k *back then* and we gave them about 200k. But after I built a deck and paid DP$L, we were closer to $220k. But that includes stained wood trim and solid doors, an extra bathroom, a full ranch walkout basement, taller roof, upgraded siding, ceramic tile everywhere except bedrooms/living room, a 3rd car garage addition, and granite counters. I did not upgrade cabinets, or 9' ceilings, or 9' basement pour and we are enjoying the heck out of this house on 4 acres. All in for $280 with land.
