I just looked again at your original photo. If you can pull the sofa and whatever chairs into the rug, into the room (sofa not on the walls - move out by even say 6-12 inches), your room will suddenly look much bigger. Odd but true. Actually you could use a small rug with color and do it. Thanks for persevering with us on Houzz.

Rugs are so expensive and i want something i can change around if we buy another house or upgrade our furniture. i love orange but i feel like i'm limited. i do like west elm and love their style. i would like to purchase a rug from them than overstock in the event i don't like it, i can easily return it.

also, a large sunburst or gold frame artwork is expensive too. so with both the rug and artwork, that's $1k right there. do you have any websites you like for home shopping?

also, the room is an 11x14 space but the other side is entry into the dining room which is probably another nightmare. i will take a picture and show you once i get home.

Not sure where you live, but keep checking places like TJ Maxx. On-line, I've had great luck with HomeDecorators.com, for rugs and art. Good Luck.

Weighing in here. The sofa and chair are decidedly "modern" in feel. Keep the graphic pillows, return the floral - too "classic formal." If you like floral, find something on the funky side. And you should bring in at least one pillow with a bit of sheen to mirror the sheen of the leather pieces. The fabric pillows look very "add on." Move the three pictures closer together, it feels like you're trying too hard to match the sofa width.

You could get a light color rug that has an orange pattern across it. Go with flat weave. Then you won't have to replace it if you change your mind, you can layer another, smaller, rug on top. Another option is FLOR - we just 'created' a 9' x 9' custom rug for our dining room for under $500 (flor is on sale right now) I chose the colors I wanted and the designer came up with the perfect rug. The nifty thing is that I can change out a color and 'remake' the rug in the future.

wow. that's awesome! i never thought about FLOR. also, i did take down the frames. thinking of grabbing a bunch of frames and making a collage behind the sofa. i have so many frames and i see people doing that all the time. don't know if it may work for me.

try simply inexpensive things as for example nice white curtains (blackout, nice tought fabrics), different cushions (maybe with white/blue/cream), change rug, add some small complements like vases, beachy small items into clear bowls etc.

Something like this could be less expensive but with a warm peach or gold to warm up your room against that blue-ish wall. Then, pillows in the orange, rust, or gold tone, ...

hi. so here's my progress so far using items I already had.

I CANNOT decide on a rug. OMG. something is totally wrong with me. so sacapuntaslapioz, I like the carpet but it's so white. i have two little kids who love movie night so i need something that can last for quite some time and that may get stained. Also, in my household, it's not mandatory to wear take off your shoes. My kids do it for comfort but my husband refuses if it's not snowing or raining. urghh. anywho. I plan on visiting the FLOR store in Boston today. I feel i have boldness in the curtains above so i think i need something flat. Do you agree? or am i suppose to go bold again with the rug?

Great job on the room and all with items you already have! Very resourceful of you! Before you decide on a rug, find what you want above the couch. I'm guessing it will b fairly light in color. You may not want a light colored rug with that. That being said, here is a very similar rug to the one you liked, but it's an indoor/outdoor synthetic rug. So it resists stains and is easy to clean.

I think you are definitely on the right track. I love love love the blue wall color. The three small pictures over the couch were bugging me, so I'm glad you took those down. I feel like the wall behind the sofa is yearning for one large decorative piece - maybe a large gold sunburst mirror? You have nice neutral furniture and the blue, gold and orange combo of accent colors feels very fresh.

The art above the couch is too small. I like the three pieces but they just aren't substantial enough.

I saw a room where there were six pictures like that, three below and three above. It looked great.

You need one large piece of art above the sofa instead of the grouping. Will make a huge difference!

this one is $149. Although it does not have orange it has rust. these rugs can work very hard because they can take pops of related color in their stride. plus dirt does not show. get an enzymatic cleaner, and those babies can take about everything (4 boxers tested- tracking all sort f things from outside)

I'm back. look at what I found for behind the sofa. thinking of doing a collage of the mirrors. I have a really big mirror but the others are small. someone said to do an odd number of mirrors. can't wait to hang them up to get your opinions. also, I have an idea of a rug.

Before you put holes in the wall, consider switching out a mirror or two for a midsize selection to transition between your current sizes. Place them on the floor for arranging until you are pleased w the result.

I am also against the tide re. your rug. You have a lot going on in a very small space, and don't seem to need another active pattern or warm tone.

The photos are showing coral and tobacco gold shades taking over, and the room appears more worn in these latest photos - consider adding some blue back into the accents, and trading beige backgrounds for white, which was giving you a more crisp look.

for a rug. what about this? it's a brown cow hide from Flor.com. they have a 25% off sale. also, my room is so small and busy, I was thinking of just getting this small rug for under the coffee table. the room is 11 x 14 and with an 8 x 10, the rug may be overwhelming. this rug is like a 5x7 but smaller because of the cutout. also, I have tossed the pillows and once I get the carpet, I'll consider what blends nicely with the pieces or whatever you guys tell me to do ;) thoughts?

I like it. I always say a room needs a bit of an animal print and a bit of velvet.

Very appealing room. With darker walls it's nice to see more pops of the accent color (in this case, orange) in the curtains/drapes; perhaps a throw over the bench in an orange or reupholstered in a pattern that is complimentary to throw pillows; pillows of different sizes that emphasize more of the orange and less of the tan with a couple of blue and white patterned pillows to compliment the blue walls. A brighter or lighter colored rug that compliments the sofa, placed under the bench could finish it all off nicely. Happy decorating and hope this helps.

I agree the side tables are a big problem here and the advice about the rug was really good! Also some new curtains that pull the warm colours from the throw pillows would be much better than the cold greyish/white. Good luck!

I made some progress, and wanted to show where I'm at today. I had the orange pillows but I don't like them anymore. seems to big. I recently took done the curtains to give them a good shake through outside to remove dust. I did get a carpet from Flor and I love the animal print. someone on the post suggested. based upon on the carpet choice, should I go with multi print curtains? what color pillows should I get? solid, or printed? thanks

My opinion is that drapes are what make a room look 'complete'. Try adding fuller floor length drapes in a print.

I have a friend who has no drapes in her entire house (allergy reasons), but her very nice house always felt odd and unfinished until I figured out what was missing!

I think there's a way to make the walls, sofa, and the Orange accent color work if you got a new area rug to tie them together. Get a larger size than what you have now. I pulled these off Walmart.com.

Totally agree with re-painting the walls a cream color and adding perhaps a modern rug. The furniture, walls and trim do seem to fight one another however, with the walls and trim begging a totally different style of furniture. Another possibility is to abandon the orange totally, get some fabric that blends with the walls, add a simple wide band of white grosgrain ribbon and a simple band of tan to blend with your sofa and make some simple tie-in-the-back throw pillows. Another option is to get yourself a large picture for over the sofa that plays off all the colors in the room - framed in a modern frame. Doing the last suggestion would help to eliminate the cluttered look with small pieces (sofa pillows, throw pillows, etc.) and bring a peaceful and uncluttered look to the room, hopefully complimenting the walls and trim.
