Yes, but you have a nice backsplash, so try the cheaper option first! :-) Plus, if that tile is the least bit blue, it is going to "orange up" your cabinets.

Shaker style doors are a classic that can go modern or traditional, depending upon other finishes and hardware. See Houzz Photos under "Shaker cabinets" for proof.

Agree that shaker can be "modernized". The travertine just feels dated to me.

Thank you for your suggestions. Any thoughts on what color to use for a darker paint color? The room opens to a great room which is painted tea chest brown so I need to find a color that compliments that as well. Granite is new venetian gold.

Before changing the backsplash, I would paint using a mid range grey, which would be complimentary to all of your components. The color below may be a touch dark, but picture gives you an idea. Add patterned roman blinds and a fun, modern runner. You should be good.

Photo of dining room? Do you have extra paint from the dining room? If so, paint a foamcore board and prop it up above the cabinets. A chocolate brown paint might look dramatic.

Here us a picture of dining room and part of the attached living room. I like the idea of a dark gray but not sure how it goes with brown in living room

Grey and brown are complimentary. If concerned, use the same level of intensity for the grey. For example if your brown is the third color down on a color swatch card, use a grey that is third one down as well.
