I think having two makes perfect sense in a combo tub/shower. I would probably have the vertical one start at the top of the horizontal, to be sure you don't feel like you have your head in his niche when you're in the tub.

What sort of dimension would you think ?

Could you make it the same size as the one you're planning down low? I love the look of a tall niche with a couple of glass shelves.

I prefer niches on the side walls, rather than on the back wall that you see directly on from the rest of the bathroom, especially if plumbing fixtures are also mounted there. Unless the shower is big, it can start to look cluttered. The niches with subtle decorative inserts can look nice at completion, when they are empty, but as soon as they begin to fill up with branded hair products, I'd rather have them off to one side.
