backyard planning

I'm trying to plan how to make my backyard more attractive and welcoming. I want to plant herbs, vegetables, and fruits, as well as perennial flowers. (Washington DC. zone 7.) I'm also debating having a patio/firepit built and staining the fence and decks.

I struggle because it's a narrow yard, and the sidewalk is a straight shot. I haven't found many similar layouts. I'm not crazy about just sticking a bunch of raised garden beds around the perimeter, but I also don't know how to incorporate plants throughout the grassy yard so that they're not just around the edge. A tree or two would be nice, as long as they don't get too large.

Any planting ideas? And do you think a patio off the bottom of the deck steps would make it too busy back there? I love the top deck off the master bedroom, but I also kind of hate it because it just looks odd to me.

Thank you!
