Front Garage Cookie Cutter Home - Character

My husband and I purchased our first home last year. We renovated the interior with great success but the outside needs some work. We've already removed the mugle pine and basically everything from the front garden and replaced it with some perenials.

We've already removed the mugo pine and basically everything from the front
garden and replaced it with some perennials (I’m not sure whether this image
appeared in the post). I would like to give the house some character but it is
really difficult on a budget. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (my
husband is a carpenter so any woodworking should be easily accomplished). I am
having trouble visualizing how a front garage house could have character.

I’m thinking a new front door? And a more modern pergola
over the garage door?

The rock on the garage is staying as is the color scheme (for
now). I am looking for quicker/affordable solutions.
