I would put one sofa against the wall and tv in front of it. Then I would add more artwork on the wall above the sofa.nthen I would put side tables on the sides. Adding artworks creates like an accent wall and makes the wall stand out

I'm not a big fan on mounting a TV above a fireplace but in this case it might make sense. Loose the mantle and mount the TV. , relocate the sofa to the large wall and purchase a much larger area rug. the rug should fit under the front legs of both sofa's.

Keeping the arrangement as is, you need a bigger tv cabinet...in comparison to the fireplace and furniture, it's too small for the tv as well as the space. An arrangement of framed art around it would help with the scale. If you move the tv to another room, I would rearrange the room completely.

A mirror could make a nice decoration

I agree with adding something bigger for the TV - it looks lost at the mo. I do like the idea of a white/light colored entertainment unit and/or bookcases, but if you prefer to echo the dark sofas...

[I came across this 3-Pc-Entertainment-Center[(https://www.houzz.com/products/3-pc-entertainment-center-prvw-vr~14145676) and thought it might fit well in the space. It's dark, but not heavy looking or too intrusive. Less than $700.

Housegal200 has the absolute best solution. You dont have to spend a lot of money on built in cabinetry. Look for a series of vintage pieces in a similar style those large wall units back in the day that come in three pieces and where that useless piece with the useless tv opening is put additional shelves, upgrade cheap bookcases with a tongue and groove back, or wall paper or a paint colour. Use a console table vintage find for the tv but baskets or ottamans underneath. And a bridge across the top of tv. Paint the vintage pieces cloud white (benjamin moore). And you have a custom look for under $500 or less depending on your shopping savey. Just noticed you can use your current tv stand! You really need serious height on that wall to balance large windows, fireplace and staircase. Go Big and tall.

What a cozy home. I have a couple of suggestions. First would be to move the loveseat in closer to the sofa so the front legs are sitting on the rug and then place a small end table in between the sofa and loveseat or stack some baskets in the little space that will be created. Not sure if budget allows for a larger TV unit so I am going to proceed as if it does not. In that case, you might want to paint the wall in an accent color (keep it light as the rest of the furn and brick is dark i.e. a sage green or soft bluish gray pulled from the rug. Place a chair in the corner as you suggested with a large plant at the foot of the stairs and that will create a visual closing in of the wall, making it possible to hang a gallery of sorts above the tv and if possible, hang the TV on the wall also. Recover those small stools in an affordable vinyl in one of your colors and use one as end table next to the chair you are going to place in front of the window and maybe one on the stairway wall behind the loveseat with a piece of colorful artwork hung above it. And add some colorful pillows and a throw in colors pulled from the rug. I might even suggest you paint the white media unit in a deep blue or red, just for fun. Picture above the fireplace is a bit too small so incorporate that into your wall gallery and hang a nice mirror above the fireplace to reflect some artwork on the stairway wall. Most of all, have fun!

I think what you have is very nice, a little rearrangement of the furniture would do the trick, the ottoman that you have is not in use so far from any furniture so move it in closer to one of the sofas. As for the entertainment center, you can build that up just by adding something under it even if it's just cinder blocks and a white painted wood around the front and sides to hide the blocks. Practically zero dollars, yes, I agree that a mirror over the fireplace, a linear one would help bring the focus down a bit. It's all about balance.

Center the tv with the ceiling fan and on either side mount wall shelves. You can create vignettes using books, photos or art. Remove the flowers and possibly replace it with another plant thats taller in order to make up for the large windows and wall.

You have beautiful light coming in the windows. Don't miss out on putting a comfy chair by the window for reading in that lovely light.

A mural perhaps?

Instead of that pot put a very large Palm in a big nice ceramic pot. On other side get 2, 6' floor mirrors with wide dark frames. Ikea's sells not expensive. Place and lean on bigger wall with 5-7" between them. A small chair in a color or a print by window. I really hate fans. But some areas need them. If not keeping a drum style ceiling light 24" or bigger drop down slightly. Lamp plus sell. Just use electrical from fan.

A big round table between sofa and love seat. Add tall items in a accent color. On fireplace remove all. Over fireplace a big picture that can fit in that opening. Make sure it's tall enough. Add some pillows to furn from rug. To tie together. Panels on ends of window. Go 2 shades darker than walls. Getting a club chair in color from rug would help.

I agree the rug should be bigger.

Your arrangement now, works. I would keep it. TV over fireplaces is dated.

Going a longer media in a reclaimed wood would help too. Add a bigger TV like 60 or 70" TV are going very very big. Some cover entire walls.

Boy, I'm really surprised. It seems like everything houzzers are telling you goes against what they tell everyone else. Well, not everyone.

I would like to see a tall white bookcase to the right, not real close, but to the right of the TV. Dress it with 1/3 books, 1/3 collections & 1/3 empty space. At first when I looked at your room I could see a very large collection of art on that wall. It might help to add crown, but I can understand that may be a never ending project if you have an open arrangement.

Do hang a larger piece of art above the fireplace or a mirror as was suggested by someone. Reflecting the staircase would be very interesting. You can also continue art up the staircase wall. Please do not hang the TV above the fireplace or buy an even larger TV. You can bring your furniture in closer if you have trouble seeing it. It could add to the coziness as well.

It would help if you used a larger piece of furniture to hold the TV, and I would put a floor lamp in the dark corner to the right of the TV, both for light and for vertical interest. You could move the loveseat to that wall, next to the lamp, and put a chair where the loveseat is now (I imagine someone sits there to watch TV). Replace the vase in front of the window with a tall, full plant or a trailing plant on a tall stand. And if you did all that, I think a quilt or even a large piece of fabric stretched over a frame would look great hanging in the space between the TV and the floor lamp (whether or not you put a chair or the loveseat against that wall--a quilt could even hang down behind the chair/loveseat).

It appears that this room must be your families main room for entertainment. Therefore, I agree with the post that perhaps a clean looking built-in would provide an additional focal point and space for media, books, and games. I have seen these constructed very simply using IKEA cabinet bases with custom shelving built above.

Something else to consider would be creating a series of large "faux" mirrored windows along the wall as a real eye popper. They would reflect additional light and could be constructed using standard moulding or purchased to match your existing railings. Something like this from Ballard Designs:

I would paint that wall to make it a feature wall, then maybe some framed photos or pictures hung near/opposite the staircase

Diana, after you have raised and centered the tv stand you have room for a small occasional chair between the tv and window. I think a series of framed art works on either side of the tv stand, hang the first picture up a little higher than the new height of the tv stand, then two under the first one, like a pyramid. I find lots of frames in Salvation Army or other thrift stores, white frames would bring out the tv stand and look good against the tan? wall.

Raising the tv stand is going to make the wall less spacious, you might try hanging a shelf with a plant and a couple of books, play with the arrangement of art and or shelves or both. If you move the one sofa in a little close you can use the rug you have, it needs to be centered as well.

I'd put in built-in cupboards and bookshelves like the white wall system shown above.

Put the TV over the fireplace....add another couch or move the love seat along the old TV wall....but move it out from the wall and put a high console table behind it with some beautiful sculptures or lamp, etc on it...paint that wall in a different colour..perhaps a darker shade of your wall colour or a bolder colour that can be repeated in nearby rooms as accent pieces. ...if you move the love seat add several more comfy chairs and create a nice reading area,,add some baskets of magazines by the chairs, a lamp....

Use upper cabinets as base.

I think you need to think BIG! That wall needs a good sized wall unit to hold the TV, books, etc. (TV behind a door please so it's not a focal point of the room), art work, 6 ft plants--remember think BIG!

Painting the fireplace will balance a large scale wall unit.

You need a bookcase on the wall, the TV and cabinet are too small in proportion to the width of wall.

Diana, would it be possible to tell us what you can or can't do? Many of the suggestions are calling for a wall of shelving, bookcases etc. but your budget is the key to suggestions or if you completely against that type of coverage it wipes out 3/4 of the suggestions on this post.

You can definitely go bigger on the entertainment center and add some bookcases. For the area facing the stairs, maybe a large art piece with a bench or chaise.

Definitely an accent chair near the window - comfortable enough for reading and maybe one that can swivel in case you're reading on a laptop. Use a light color from the rug - a dark color will fade pretty fast in that great natural light.
If you don't want to commit to a big wall unit, the area to the right of the TV could handle 2 tall framed posters that are thematically similar (depends what you like - there are great reproduction travel posters with strong graphics). A less complicated look would be stretched fabric on 2 or more frames echoing the graphic look you have in the pillows and rug. I've also seen a dark corner like this brightened by a mix of 4 or more mirrors in old or interesting frames. A framing shop can usually make mirrors, too.

Furniture placement is important. I agree with the above comment about placing the tv over the fireplace. If you do that you could put the sofa on the wall. The rug and tv console are not the correct size for the room.

I don't like tv above fireplace--you have to sit with neck at angle to watch tv....makes no sense to me....I love idea about wall unit....will make that wall!! I would put a large floor to ceiling (or close) art piece at end of stairs--picture?? metal art?? something to wow you coming down the stairs and to brighten up the corner. Also--could you get a bigger fan--that one looks too small for the room.

Nice color from the rug. It looks like the tv and the console need to be larger (your husband would love that!) for this nice big room. Move the love seat onto the rug by a few inches, at least. With a larger console, maybe with bookcases on the ends, incorporate art. For an immediate (and cheaper fix) Is the area at the bottom of the stairs large enough for a chair and floor lamp, pictures, etc. for a nice reading nook?

Wallpaper the wall. Keep the room elegantly simple and uncluttered.

Great idea's by others. Definitely paint out the fireplace - it looks cluttered and dated. Add at least 1 chair or a chair and a half in the corner near the window, angled. Larger rug; small round table between sofas in picture, and round out with a bookcase or larger TV stand on the wall near the chair - with pictures, mirror, and something 3D like a vase hanging on the way to add depth. The room is lovely - just needs some refining.

Add hanging panels to the window. Add a large plant to the corner beside the window. Hang the TV a little higher on the wall and remove the objects beside the credenza. Leave the rest of the wall blank. Less is more.
