Bedroom makeover, need insight and s glass of wine!

Hi! I am in the process of doing a few small things to liven up our BR. Some areas I cannot change yet are, carpet, Bed, and dressers and picture above bed. Two pieces I would like to find are; something to put our books in (& remove ugly book stand!)and second we need additional storage for my clothes (where I currently have taller wood stand).

Lastly, I added two new lamps, mirrors above night stands, Two new photos of left and right side of bed, two rugs next to each side of bed, candle holders and two mirrored trays I "re-purposed" from our LR to our BR. Is this working? It looks pleasing to eye in person but wanted feedback -- I left all tags on everything LoL so am flexible with those items.

LOL!! Yes so much to sort through but I am getting it I think :-)

Here is what we did with wall....now I think we need to paint entire room? Or is the striped wall "ok" with the other walls "Swiss Coffee" color?

I am returning lamps, mirrors, and two side rugs. Now I need to find new lamps?? What color, silver or glass?

I may start searching for mirrored night stands, see what I can find affordable.

Yes, I hate the tall dresser that matches our "set"!

We moved the long dresser to wall where my pic is. What do u think!?
Also moved dark ottoman under window. I'll continue search for different ottoman or new material to put on.
Also here is pic of what I see from BR.

We have that exact 'sink in the bedroom' setup. I will be watching for any suggestions.

Love the stripes! Yes, you may have to paint the other walls. Love the long dresser in its new location. Now you have to lower your pic a few inches. It is too high. Maybe your new lamps can be in an accent color. Blue? (which seems to be the color for 2015.) Then you could have blue cushions any maybe a blue-gray print on a new ottoman (which does work better under the window.)

Is there a curtain on your closet between the bathroom and bedroom? Is it a walk-in closet? I think you should change the curtain if that is what it is. Too dark. Maybe to one in gray- the kind with grommets so it moves easily on a rod.

Keep up the good work. It is looking good.

I didn't address the bathroom but I would say that it needs to be pretty as well as functional. No rug needed. Perhaps just one picture- the one on the right as there is already what I guess is a mirrored medicine cabinet on the left. Definitely change the curtain (also shorten it).

Perhaps the vanity could be dressed up with a basket to hold some of the items.

Wow - what you've changed looks so different! What do you think? I would get taller lamps, either mirrored or glass. (these are lovely but too short) Not sure I like the trays. They look very nice but aren't that functional. I do think you will need to paint there best of the room the lighter gray color. Be sure to take into account the color of your carpet as it will appear much creamier in color against the gray. I prefer your bench at the foot of the bed. That area by the window has a few too many boxes. I would also put a textured throw across the bench. I'd remove the sheers. I'd also move your curtains to not cover the window, rather to cover the wall and come right up to the edge of the window. This will allow as much light into the room as possible and make your window appear larger. I'd leave the white blinds. It looks great. I love the dresser beneath your picture, although it does need to come down a bit. I also would not put things on your dresser in a symmetrical layout. Rather, balance something tall on the left. Perhaps some decorative candlesticks? Get a nice jewelry chest that will keep your jewelry neat. Try to only put larger pieces on that dresser so the picture is the focus and doesn't compete with things that are intricate, like jewelry.

As for the bathroom, it looks like you can't get a pocket door to line up with the door on the left? Consider installing straight panel curtains and attach the rod to your ceiling. These are not expensive and you can get them at IKEA. You can select something that is opaque but not completey solid fabric. You get hint of what is behind there, but you aren't staring at your mirror and sink.

The wall is a wow and the dresser fits just as I anticipated. As for the bench, I thought you said you needed a bookcase, so that's where I suggested you place one, but without the sheers. I too think you'll want to paint the other walls.

Well I initially thought I needed a bookcase, but instead found room in my hallway closets/storage. Vs in our room. I also removed that ugly tall storage thing, took clothes out and found room in my closet, reorganized it :-). And now have all the pieces that fit a little better.

Can you help me understand the curtains a little more? We don't have blinds on the two outside windows, only middle window so that's why I have those grey-panels. I hate blinds lol if our room didn't face the Main Street I'd have no blinds!!

If we paint the rest of room, I do hope it finest make carpet look bad. But would white or very light grey work?

I'll adjust painting! And fix up what to place on both dressers. I also need ideas for new pillows.

OH-so consensus seems to be NO picture on either side of walls by bed??

Thanks for the clarification, I hadn't noticed you don't have blinds on all the windows. Here's another picture of this system. It can attach to both walls or ceilings. It's on a track so you simply slide them over. The panels are about 24 inches wide. Here's another picture. Google Kvartel.

I really like your headboard wall painted! Nice job. You can use the same light gray paint on the other walls or if you want those walls lighter just do a a 50% mix of white paint with the light gray paint. Good luck. you may find Mercury glass lamps at Home Goods orTuesday Mornings, etc.

No pics on either side walls by bed. Makes the space look smaller. Yes to painting the other walls. Glad the bookcase is gone. Still think blue accents would be great. I think the pics we suggested you remove had blue in them. As I said, it is the color this year. You might find some at Home Goods or the mercury lamps that a few people suggested. I am a purging maniac but didn't want to suggest you start getting rid of things. That said, you did it on your own. Good job! I purge my closets every six months and am ruthless. As I said, less is always a good idea.

I agree about placement of items on the long dresser. A nice jewelry box (probably at Home Goods), a tray in a silvery finish for other items would be a good start to decorating the dresser.

That dark ottoman is still wrong. A nice upholstered bench would look good there if it were light in color and design.

LOVE IT.The furniture is placed exactly where it needs to be to balance the room. The bedspread looks brown ,if it is bring that beautiful blue throw back or use a throw the color of the side walls to tie into the feature wall.If bedspread gray do same.I like the lamps. Using mirrored night stands will change the tone of the room.It will make the room more formal and might conflict with your current style. The furniture appears black with silver nobs which would go well with mirrored night stands.Home Goods and TJ Maxx have mirrored night stands.Have you considered diy your current night stands to mirrored?Just google diy and multiple sites.

I see that you've had a lot of advice both from pros and lay people - however, if I may point out, I think your main problem is the "exposure" to the bathroom, which is not pretty nor good design.

I suggest a sliding modern style "barn door" at the entry to the bath. It seems you may have clearance outside the bathroom however not sure what the layout is inside the bath - whether there's room for mounting the necessary hardware etc.,

BTW although we are a full service design studio based in Los Angeles, we specialize in providing solutions on the internet, to our client base all over the country, helping them with "problem areas" around the house! Feel free to use us on the net!

@Tori I agree! It has always been a big problem area. We have plans of redoing the entire bathroom closet etc., however that will be around $25-$30,000. We will look into the barn door idea not sure how that would work, but we can look into it.

I love the barn door idea - but it doesn't seem in keeping with the style you've created so far. Your bedroom now looks sophisticated and the barn door while hip, is a bit more rustic.

The sliding barn door concept doesn't have to look barn-like!

Since the vanity is visible from the bedroom, remove the large frameless mirror, and put up a small decorative mirror in a frame to make the whole vanity look like a dresser with a matching mirror over it. Nothing says bathroom like the giant mirror over the sink, and if you remove that it won't look so much like a sink in your bedroom. If you replace the vanity, get a taller one with legs. We have this same wall-to-wall vanity in an alcove off our bedroom too, and we plan to do this when re remodel. Maybe you could even put a lamp on the counter, or low sconce to make it look more like a dresser than a sink.

Wow! What a transformation! The wall came out great, the mirrors are gone, the dresser is great on that wall and your beautiful picture looks good, perfect place for the ottoman (wanted to suggest that the ottoman go under window but felt I was saying enough!) How did you do with the tv? Sorry about the pictures on the side walls…they really bring in colors of the room but just can't go on those walls. The lamps are not too bad, but maybe due to room they take up keep them thin, not plunky or find something without shades, like all glass so light dissipates more evenly…almost like hurricanes but look for something more modern if you prefer. Don't go too crazy over your curtains… you have to feel comfortable with them and they have to function for you as needed. The color brings together wall color so it's not bad. If you can find another pair, put them where the brown ones are to pull things together until you decide what you can renovate. Speaking of renovating, that sounds like a fortune! Is the rest of bath behind that brown curtain or is that the closet? If its the rest of the bathroom, put in pocket doors or barn doors that are not too "barny" that close off sink area and make it separate. Paint the walls the lighter grey, but if you like them as is, let them tie in your creamy rug. Now that all the things have been moved for placement and visual reasons, let your personal preferences guide you for color and combos….it's your room!!! It has to say "this is what I like!" Don't lose yourself in all of this. All your "Houzz friends" have done a great job, but now you have to make it yours! Good job everybody! Now I know whom I can count on when I redo my bedroom!!! Enjoy your room!

Lighten the Gray bedspread , a softer Siver/ gray etc. Remove painting from back of bed. Get that TV OFF the wall! Make a seating reading area with a glam(ish) lamp- floor or small table. A TINY bit of bling/ ( gold and silver DO mix. BIG Accent pillows on bed/ ( two would be fine. ( faux fur? One area rug. MNice start though.Get rid of some clutter/ this is your santuary. A Throw on the bed or chair . Balance. A tiny bit of black to "ground", anything- small anything -but THREE in different places in the room. Madeliene

As an alternative to the barn door idea (and I think I'd try to do anything so I didn't have to look directly into the bathroom), how about that panel drapery system...ceiling mounted? You may be able to find panels that are wider than 24inches, so you wouldn't need many. Even a seamstress might be able to make. I have a neighbor who has a short set like that to close off her kitchen area (over a peninsula) from her living room. Or a tall folding screen in a pretty fabric....you could plunk it there during the day to hide the direct "look" into the bath area.
Wall came out great. Other walls look fine. Look at Z Galleries for mirrored nite stands. Silver for lamps go taller. IKEA and TJMax also sell them.
Hard to tell color on computer. What color are stripes and other walls?
I vote for barn door for bath, if room to push to side. Use brush nickel hard ware and go a color lighter than walls. Barn door name is just that. They can go with any look.

I have been progressively remodeling/restoring an old Vic for the last few years. I have high ceilings, which are almost as hard sometimes to work with as what short ones yours appear to be. FIRST: love the striped wall. But the bed is too tall for your ceiling height. Can you lose a foot or so by getting rid of the box spring, or whatever it is that makes the bed so tall? Let the headboard be your reach "up" with nothing else above it. The bed is just so tall that the wall looks stunted. SECOND: paint the bedside tables white, add contemporary/mod hardware, and get rid of the accessories on top of them... it looks cluttered. I would also paint the low chest white and keep it opposite the bed with your "lady" above it. The contrast of the white and black will make her pop. The furniture is just so dark that the room looks more like a cave. THREE: I would still put the mirrors back on that wall (to reflect light) above the bedside tables, but with tall, thin, post-like lamps with simple shades in front of them. FOUR: get rid of the dark trunk and replace it with a small, low accent-piece chest of drawers, with a small and simple bergere (reading) chair, under the window. FIVE: for that sink and clutter, look into IKEA's Godmorgan medicine cabinets. They are in three sizes and mirrored inside AND out. I used two sizes to create a wall of mirrors in my recent bath remodel (over the sink and commode). Have fun!

Oh, yes, a lighter bedcover ... silver or dove grey. But BE CAREFUL! Grey can be tricky and can appear blue or purple, or even an odd green, depending on the lighting. And I found a pic of a chest I found at auction. It has a small "shelf" that pulls out just below the top, for resting coffee and a book. The top houses a Venetian glass lamp and a collection of antique glass paperweights which look amazing in the natural light of the windows above it all.

Before you deconstruct your bed - make sure the mattress is made to support you without a box spring or frame. If this was a 2 piece set, the mattress needs the box spring to take the weight. A good nights sleep is more important than a "look".

Silly me, I was thinking of (IKEA) slats to support the mattress, but forgot to suggest it!

    Ok:

    1) new lamps: good no? :-)

    2) talking to hubby about "barn door" idea he liked it. Definitely will remove large mirror in sink area. And then remove medicine cabinet. It's ugly lol

    3) put a different bedspread (I had) on bed--so hard to see in dark, but will re take tomorrow

    4) I took out two mirrored trays on night stand--I'll continue to look for mirrored ones.

    5) I re-purposed mirrors trays on main dresser....???

6). Still need to move TV but hubby out of town for work!!

    7) still would like to paint other walls....need to determine actual color ....? Tough one.

8). The stripped walls are gray and light gray (like bedding) m
Oh, and wanted to show photo of how off the door frame to the closet is... Which may make it hard to put barn door in or hang curtain?? Thus our expensive re model-and moving walls plumbing etc Bay Area pricing

Love the ideas and input SO inspirational

    Hi krf10,

This is my first blog activity on Houzz, and I am having a great time. Thank you.

Here is a pic of a tiny gable bedroom on my third floor, where I had to use as many small pieces as possible. The pic is a bit fuzzy, but here you will see a pair of tall and thin lamps (from TJ Maxx??) on tiny IKEA bedside tables (with special drawers designed for bedside technology). The diminutive lamps allow a cup of coffee when lounging to read, and an iPhone used as an alarm clock. The white color allows the tables to blend into the white bead board wall, rather than a dark color which arrests the eyes, a visual stop sign. I have since removed the items from the table tops.

    Thanks!

    B

PS, you have to click the photo to see the left lamp.

krf10- You are doing such a great job of making changes! The problem is once your "audience" starts making suggestions, we can't stop.

    I like your new lamps.

Happy that you removed the medicine cabinet and are thinking about nice decorative mirror instead of the generic one that is there.

I like the new bedspread-lighter and fresher.

Remove one of the trays. Get a jewelry box instead and add something tall at one end. (three candles in different heights, for example.)

I think the light gray for the walls would be good.

Your closet needs help! We have been giving you advice without any thought to the cost. In this case, you might want to spend some money on closet organizing items and use the curtain idea until you can afford to do a bigger reno.

I have a new issue now that I have seen the photo of the curtains. The hardware the rod rests on is too close to the window frame and we can see the side of the window. Move the hardware over a few inches so that the curtains frame the windows OR just put some of the grommets on the outside of the hardware so that the curtain reaches the end of the rod. Too much rod showing for no reason! Since the panels are just for show, they should frame the window and cover the sides. This will also allow more light into the room.

Your picture is still too high over the dresser. When hubby gets home, he has work to do! :)

Can't wait to see the final pics.

On my computer, the striped wall looks like two colors of blue, not grey as you state. And the plain walls look like an oatmeal color. The bedding looks like a lavender/brown. I like the combination. Very subtle shading.

Love the lamps good size and like the shape due to the curves, love how you have 2 pillows which mimic the feature wall,if the pillow in front of the stripped pillows was a little smaller would be better for my eye.You have done so well with your choices in my humble opinion.

I'd still love a cozy area rug in BR? Is that outdated? Any suggestions on size and color?

Yes, our closet is crazy. I have a lot of clothes so need major space and have to use every possible corner in that small closet. I have decided to live with it until were able to redo our bathroom and closet. That is why I had put up that little curtain!! LOL!!!

I realized after the photo of the curtain, that it wasn't all the way to the end that is easily fixable. Although I may need new panels because I don't think they will cover that hole end of the rode!

I am not sure that the curtains have to cover the whole end of the rod but they should cover the side of the window. That was my issue and why I said to put a couple of the grommets on the outside of the rod holder. Is the rod extendable? If so, just push it in a bit.

Yes, I agree about living with the closet for awhile. And a curtain in a lighter color will take attention away from it. No need for perfection all the time! (I say that as a person who is driven crazy by the imperfect.)

You might consider using space bags for off season clothing and place under the bed.If you have other closets available you could use them to store clothes. There are hangers available which can hold multiple pants or skirts. You also have available hangers which could hold a blouse and pants or skirt. Please forgive these ideas if you are already using. You are really doing well .You also might consider packing off season clothes in suitcases which have been placed in space bags.

In California, there isn't that much of an off season for clothes.

Maybe once the TV is standing on the tall dresser, you can add one tray with pretty things behind it so you're not looking at the back of the TV as you walk in? The other tray can stay on the low dresser.

    Ok!

    We painted walls! "Grey Spell"

    Grey Ottoman under window

Moved large picture down, but is it too high still?

Took TV off wall, (still need to figure this area out)

Got a new bathroom mirror and curtains for closet (grey).

Returns oval Mirrors for the rectangle ones.

Love the new mirror in the bathroom. Keep those new rectangular mirrors. They look good. I can see the 3 candle holders on the dresser. Nice. Move them to the right a few inches. Put the tray in the center of the dresser and find something else for the end. For example, maybe a white lacquered jewelry box (HomeGoods) or a small stack of your favorite hardcover books with a little bowl or knickknack on top or a bracelet tree in a nice shiny material (something that adds bling). Yes, I think the pic is still too high. Lower it to about 4 inches above the dresser. I like the new ottoman. Good choice. Don't think that you need the pillow on top. Too dark and not necessary. Closet curtains a big improvement. Love, love your changes. I have been waiting to see how it was going!

I think that you have been great allowing all of us- with different styles and ideas- to make so many suggestions about what should be changed. You have made some great choices on your own and that is what, in the end, is going to make you happiest. You also have a wonderful husband doing the "hard" labour. Lucky you! And, yes, eventually you should have a new vanity and lights that will suit the style of the vanity. But, time now to enjoy that beautiful space.
