Anything that makes my life easier, i'm all for it. My roomba runs once a week and picks up the dust bunnies, I vacuum approx. once a month, so that's a good thing!

I've had 3 Roomba vacuums and the Roomba mop and love them. The reason for 3 vacuums isn't because they didn't last but I always have to have the latest version. I gave my older versions away to people who still use them. They are must haves.

Love my Roomba, who we named Robert. He does an awesome job of controlling the hair from my two big dogs, and is a great source of entertainment for my kids and them. If I'm honest, it's more entertaining for me; the dogs are terrified of it!

My husband bought an iRobot Roomba 780 a couple of years back to use on our hardwood floors. I wasn't so thrilled at first, but once I realized how much it helped with the pet hair from our two dogs, and crumbs from the kids, I didn't mind having it around. I say "it" but he and the kids named "it" Cookie. For a couple of weeks I just thought my then one year old was into asking me for cookies all day long until my husband finally remembered to tell me that is what they named the Roomba. So, what my youngest was really asking for the whole time was for me to turn the Roomba on. That was pretty funny. The whole family enjoys the Roomba. It is quiet, does as advertised and doesn't bother our dogs. We are happy to have Cookie as another member of our family.

It's great, I run it three times a week, and I don't really notice dog hair. I still need to vacuum up corners and harder to reach areas every couple weeks, but it definitely makes life easier!

I'm a believer. Like some other posters have mentioned however, you have to make the house "Roomba Ready". Move chairs, block spaces where you don't want it to go. Not much different if you were vacuuming regularly. I move a few things, let it go and come back and it's siting on the charger. Love it.

I would try one of the robot vacuums if they actually work well- I HATE vacuuming. Next we need a robot that dust's as well. :D

I've never had one, but if they do work then I'd love to try it out! I admit I'm pretty bad at keeping up with vacuuming on busy days so an extra helping hand never hurts.

I own two . I am an older person and can say this is one of the best inventions in my lifetime. I even called their HQ and asked if they could invent one to do stairs.

If you don't have one...buy one and try it before you pass judgement. It's great on hardwood floors, tile & carpet and saves us a huge amount of time. House always looks clean when we get home as we have it programmed to automatically clean while we're at work. Booya!

I have a Neato and absolutely love it for the maintenance everyday cleaning. It works great and helps with my dog who tends to shed slightly.

Just got our Roomba to take care of our new laminate floors. We call her Rosie (like the Jetson's maid). We're still getting to know one another but I can tell she's going to be a much loved member of the family!

I love my Roomba! Envision my dark hardwood floors at the mercy of 2 cats and a dog-- all whitish and shedding....Raleigh the Roomba goes under the bed and under all my furniture easily.
I do move my throw rugs aside first, but if it catches one, it just stops

I have 2 Neatos. One upstairs-Rosie and one downstairs-Hazel. They both are great. I have lots hardwood natural walnut floors and they show every speck. They also work on my carpets, tiles and throw rugs. They run twice a week and the only thing I have to do is pick up stuff on the floors, stack my kitchen chairs, (they do go around and under them but I like to get everything under the chairs), take a broom or a duster and go along the edges. The newer Neato is better at getting the edges, but my older one isn't. I'm waiting for them to come out with one for stairs ;). I hardly ever run my Dyson anymore except on the stairs.

I don't like the idea of this bumping into furniture, or my baseboards, if it does. (Does it do that?) Plus, I'd think it would miss spots &/or get stuck. I'm so pleased with my central vac in our home, guess I'm just not interested in getting one.

Yes, it bumps into baseboard and furniture and yes, it gets stuck. However, it doesn't hit hard enough to do any real damage -- I've done more damage trying to vacuum in a hurry with my Dyson. And when it gets stuck (usually under our stove, which is on legs) it just lifts up it's heavy-duty wheels and unsticks itself. Sometimes poor Roomba is paralyzed by the edge of the stairs and calls for help. The best thing about it is that I can run it all day long, just stopping long enough to recharge. I run it at least daily and usually 3 or more times (large house). If it misses a spot one time, it will catch up sooner or later. And if it finds a particularly dirty spot, it starts spinning tight circles until it's clean. By running it so frequently, dog hair, dust, dried mud, whatever, doesn't have the chance to work its way into rugs or under furniture -- the house just stays much cleaner, in general.

mm2014, Neato does very little bumping, and uses lasers to navigate around things. I have vintage furniture, and side lights that start an inch over the floor. I would never let a Roomba in that room, if I had one. Hearing the plate glass get bumped, would be too unnerving. The Neato also has two speeds. A slow speed, when it's navigating, and a faster speed, after navigation tells it that this area is wide open and a straight shot to the opposite end, of it's navigation point.

Thanks everyone I've leaned a lot! I definitely have more of an open mind about these things, if I'm ever looking for an addition or replacement for my wonderful central vac, or a gift for my mom or dad or such, I'll keep it mind. I'm all for ideas where I can put less strain on my back, and have more free time. :-)

The problem is its size and charge capacity. We've thought about using them but due to pricing and its capacities, runtime, water, etc. we'd need multiples to get the job done, which makes it cost prohibitive. If they made an industrial-commercially sized model maybe we'd reconsider.

I love my Roomba. I purchased one after undergoing open heart surgery and being restricted from lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds. It works great and gets dirt and dust from under furniture which is great.

I have a roomba and I love it. Its great for maintaining floors with very little effort. It is especially great when you deal with pet hair. makaloco said that its a motorized dog toy and that is basically true. Here's a video of our French Bulldog with our roomba.

I've sort of wondered why I never see their commercials advertise the product used in an industrial or facilities (like a rest home) or the like environment. Their install base can't be that diverse, is it?

Today's Roomba would be really inappropriate for most commercial environments, primarily becasuse of the way it wanders aimlessly and takes a long time to cover an area. As much as I love my Roomba, whenever the kitchen or hallway is a big mess and I want a quick cleanup, I grab a broom and do it myself in 2 minutes (then use Roomba as a dustpan). Roomba would take 2 hours and may never get to some spots without special assistance. Also, in commercial settings, Roomba could be a hazard to employees and customers walking nearby. Also, due to the Roomba's small bin which needs frequent emptying, someone would have to attend Roomba as it works.

OTOH, every one of those problems is readily solvable, with features like a huge commercial size dustbin and GPS-guided mapping and efficient coverage of space. It would be a very different user model and product then. Just not a clear business case atm, but I could definitely see it coming in the future.

I have 2 Roomba's - they are my must have cleaning tools! I love them! Keep in mind I am not into have "too" much stuff, so I pick one or two things up and let the Roomba go - while they are running - I take my shark sweeper around with the tools and get the hard to reach areas, stairs, furniture. etc... Then I either mop or bona the floors. Having a Saint Bernard - my floors always look dirty. I really don't have anything nice to say to the woman that says it is lazy - that is a stupid comment - I vac every day and this is a great timesaver. If you have a ton of stuff (furniture, stuff laying on the floor) this may not be the product for you. I did replace the rugs in the photo, the Roomba wouldn't go on the black one. Note also, that I don't run the Roomba when I am not home, so the chances of it running over dog or cat poo or very very slim.

One thing a roomba does besides vacuuming is train you to keep things off the floor! When I first brought mine home I had to go around the house and stow all hanging cords and small items that had found their way onto the floor. I end up putting my dining chairs upside down on the dining table because I can't stand all the banging into the legs over and over again that the roomba does, takes forever to clean the dining area if the chairs are on the floor. It's worth it to me though because then I don't have to lift the heavier pieces of furniture to sweep under them.

Each to their own, but definitely not for me. Too modern and I would be bored without a vacuum cleaner lol!

I've always wanted one, but not sure if they're practical for carpets..I figured they are best used for hard floors.

We all got one for Christmas one year. Never liked it. Would get stuck on furniture legs. Took forever to sweep my kitchen. A job I could do in 2 minutes, took 30 .

Came home to find the Roomba in the kitchen. It had dragged my bathing suit top from my bedroom. I hadn't even started it and was not set to clean maybe the cat or my husband had something to do with it

houseatthelake, that's too funny! Our Roomba has attempted to swallow a sock, so I've learned to do a quick check for such things before pushing the "Clean" button. Socks, bathing suit tops, etc. aside, I love my Roomba on our wood floors.

lc29, get a Neato. It doesn't bounce of the dining room chairs, it navigates around them at a slower speed. Sure, it takes a little longer with the chairs in place, because it moves more slowly, as it senses obstacles. For instance, when it sense a leg, it'll curve around, then back up, and pull forward and closer to it, like when you're parallel parking.

We have had one for a couple of years and have loved it, but it does take some forethought. Pick up phone charging cords or other objects before using. We program ours to clean at night and wake up to clean floors. BUT, we have to keep it away from bedrooms for those middle of the night cleanings. We have had progressively worse trouble with it getting stuck under our kitchen cabinets and have recently found a hack to solve this problem, but not before it tore its sensor out (unfortunately un-repairable)and now cannot find its way back to the charging station. It can still be used but we have to be content that it will clean until the battery runs out, whatever room that may be in. I received a newer model for Christmas 2015 (870 model) and it immediately got stuck and broke its bumper so they are sending me a new one and postage to return the broken one. (We did not know about the 'hack' before using the new Roomba). All in all, I LOVE having it. We have two small dogs who make messes every day and Roomba keeps areas clean enough that I only get the real vacuum out every other week for deep cleaning. I have to empty its dust bin about every 2-3 days which is easy to do. But this is important: YOU CANNOT LEAVE DOGS WHO POOP/ETC. ALONE WITH A ROOMBA. We left our two dogs overnight once with food, and newspapers on the floor ....totally forgot that the roomba would run that night. Sorry for the image, but I will say that we know that Roomba really does cover every square inch...

I have had Roombas for 6 years now. Over that time I have perfected my technique to facilitate using them to their full potential. I have two cats, an Irish Setter with GOBS of hair, a daughter with Gobs of hair and myself with gobs of hair. I have one on each floor of our three floor house, which means each one covers around 800 sf.

They do best if I have them programed to run once a day. The oldest one has the bristle brushes and is on the bottom floor, where the pets are not, so there is less hair. Cleaning the older model of hair was a big pain. I did it because it was still worth it to me and my bad back to not run a regular vacuum.

The middle floor and the top floor have the 800 series and are the BOMB. The redesign of the cylinders to silicone covers makes cleaning them of pet and people hair a breeze. They are also quieter than the older models. I feel they do a very good job, but they have to run regularly. They are not a once a week deal.

My pet beds are all up on platforms, cool suitcases on legs, funky coffee tables cut down, so that the Roomba can get under them and all around them. Our small waste cans in each room are up, hanging on walls, on the bottom shelf of end tables or night stands or somewhere that I don't have to pick them up to clear the floor. I try to get the light weight chairs up off the floor ( flipped over and on the dining room table for instance, but I don't always have time to do that and it runs fine with the chairs down.

There are a few places I have found over the years where it sticks occasionally. Those places I have arranged for barriers to prevent the problem. Under a claw foot tub with a low end I put a weighted down small box that turns it back before it sticks in that spot. If the floors are really dirty it will fill up and pause for you to empty the bin before continuing on. Otherwise it vacuums until the battery is low and the returns to it's charger to be ready for the next day.

It takes me about 2 minutes to clean the new models, and about 5 to do the old one. So once I replace the old one with an 800 series my floor will be clean with six minutes a day of effort on my part.

You will get my roomba outta my cold dead hands ; -)

I have a Shark robot and LOVE it. I'm amazed at how much it picks up from my hardwood and rugs. I run it every few days, and in an hour its gone through the house and tidied. Nice maintenance so I don't have to get the big vacuum out quite as often, which is great because chemo can take it out of me.

With hardwood floors throughout and 3 kitties who leave lots of fur flying, we have one pet version on each floor and love them. They are programmed to run daily each morning and make great alarm clocks. One of them gets stuck sometimes under a swivel chair if the chair is turned a certain way but we can live with that. Minimal maintenance and only replaced the rollers and brushes once so far.

I do have an older model, a 780, but I am not planning on buying another. Even though I program it for mid-morning, sometimes I hear it rolling down the bedroom hall in the middle of the night. I also find it is a pain to clean, as the filters get clogged with dust frequently and I must then disassemble it to clean it thoroughly. I do not plan on getting another one, as my Dyson (an old corded model) is easier to clean and the dust/dirt receptacle is much larger.

Yes! Roomba’s been by best buddy during my Saturday cleaning sessions. It’s so convenient to have, I use it in the second floor at the master’s bedroom and my kids’ rooms. I completely cleans under the beds, it is so practical to own one.
