My house was built in 1957 and is in Marin County, California. The floors are original. I love them - they need a lot of work - but that's for another day.

I've been told the floors are Tasmanian Oak. Can anyone confirm just by looking? Any alternative possibilities? Note it's not very hard wood - scratches and dings quite easily.

Context (for those who care about such things):

I've looked up Tasmanian oak - it looks like a possibility but NOTHING in this house is unique or high end. It makes no sense that these aren't standard 1957 wood floors.

The only floor that is not the original wood is in the kitchen. That, unfortunately, is the original greyish-greenish linoleum. (No there isn't hardwood underneath - I tried that one.) The beauty of the linoleum is appropriately highlighted by a nice cheap metal strip separating it from the wood in the dining room.

I want to extend the wood into the kitchen if possible - or at least have wood in the kitchen that I has enough similarity for some level of visual continuity. (If it's not the exact same I'll use a different pattern or design rather than pretend it matches when it doesn't.)

Help?
