I have seen a few Deck houses with cable rail to positive effect. We have been recommending solid stainless steel rod rather than cable on our recent projects One can use 3/8ths rod and whatever sort of vertical stanchion. I will post a few photos of this in a week or so. I still have to take the photos.

The photo below is from a custom house that we built in modern style. The handrail here is cable with 2" cold steel tubing drilled to accept the cables. The cap is a small piece of mahogany. This would look good on a Deck House Balcony Deck as well.
