Love the higher cabinet facing the eating area. I could see my special glassware, store the fancy flatware and dine without seeing the mess I made while cooking. Just one of many outstanding features!

Very functional expanse of counter tops! Nice cabinetry, with contrasting hutch. Soothing colors. Not sure about border, makes it a little dated. Perhaps some nice accessories on the hutch instead of non eye catching books.

Good job! Especially like the floor. Think about changing your dark electric wall plates around the backsplash to cream or better yet, buy a small can of satin finish paint matching the backsplash color and paint them so they all blend in with the backsplash. Add a beautiful green plant in an attractive container to the end of the peninsula. Pretty space.

If a person likes borders they should be able to have them. Not everyone loves the same thing. Life would be boring if our tastes were all the same! Designers seem to think that whatever they decide is the "in" style for now should be required by everyone.

Great job! Now, how about getting rid of the border where the fridge is and painting the bookcase or hutch (whatever you call it...) the same color as the rest of the cabinets... It seems out of place and would look much nicer if it blended in with the rest of the kitchen cabinets.

I think it's really awesome but would look better without the border.

You did a fantastic job! The difference between the Before and After really is amazing.
We are planning to redo our kitchen in the next few years, and your outstanding work is quite encouraging.

@Stephanie M. -- you can see the new sink in the last photo (3rd photo of the new kitchen). It's in the corner toward the eating area. We chose a single-bowl dark brown undermount, so it sort of blends into the countertop.

I appreciate the multiple recommendations to remove the border, but it's going to stay. It fits the casual, slightly country feel of our home. :) Maybe when it comes time to sell we'll take it down.

Very nice, but those glass cabinet doors so low to the ground are a danger! I assume they aren't tempered glass and they look beautiful, but with just one wrong kick of a shoe, you have an accident waiting to happen. Can you switch them out with the upper cabinets to the left of the window?

To ithadt2bu, the hutch you are referring to looks custom or a separate piece of furniture, so I highly doubt they want to paint it. I think it looks lovely.

Very nice! It does not look DIY, you guys did a fantastic job. The only two things that would be an issue for me is the border on the wall with the fridge and the stark white appliances. They draw the eye away from the beautiful cabinets. However, I have family that has the same color of cabinets and they're having a hard time finding appliances that match. Black and white stand out and SS clashes. So if anyone has any ideas please comment!! But overall the update is great! :)

Wow nice job,from the pictures many of those pros with a sign on the side of their trucks could feel the pressure. One thing more courious, fallowing the latest articulate on houzz, unless you live in one of those "civil" small areas of the country,did you get all your permits from the powers that be ? So you aren't punished for being self sufucent.

Before it had that cutesy country look that makes me shudder. Now, it's a little bit country/a little bit transitional. Really nice job.

Several folks have asked about the flooring. It's cushioned vinyl sheet, but I don't remember who makes it. (We did this project a few years ago, and the scraps don't have the manufacturer's name on them.) We purchased it through one of the local big-box retailers. I know tile and stone are "in" but I do a lot of cooking, and I much prefer standing on a cushioned (and warm!) floor.

@suellenh: yes, the dark electrical outlets definitely stand out in the pictures. In person they don't seem as bad. We considered cream instead, but it was no less noticeable, and somehow looked out of place. Sometimes you have to settle for less than perfect! *L*

@jendominguez: The glass in the display cabinet doors is actually 6.5" off the floor. We don't wear shoes in the house, aren't in the habit of dancing around the kitchen table, and we don't have little kids, so I'm not worried that a stray heel will go through them. They're not the same height as the other wall cabinets, so they have to stay where they are.

@Mark Knudsen: I guess we're lucky -- our county allows homeowners to make (certain) modifications without requiring permits. I won't go into detail because I don't want anyone to track us down. ;)

@thedoctordonna: Yes, the white appliances do stand out a bit, but I think it might be too boring if the appliances were the same color as the cabinets. We didn't want black (too dark) and didn't like the look of stainless steel with the casual/country, so that only left white. If we had a shallower fridge I think it might not be so noticeable. Maybe someday.... :)

Love it, I am thinking of painting my cabinets to a similar color and I have white appliances, I have been hesitant thinking that the white appliances would not look good, but I can't justify changing them to stainless at this time. I just might take the plunge, and I like that you kept some oak in the room.

With the fridge that stands out, you,can get fridges with cabinet door fronts. they are high end however but they do blend into the cabinet. Also dishwashers can be done this way
