Bosch Axxis makes a set I liked a lot.

We've had the Bosch Axxis for about 9 months, and like it a lot (we use them a lot more than our full sized Whirlpools, which at this point are only used for larger items). FYI, Bosch doesn't make vented dryers anymore either, but we've never had any problem with ventless.

I have an Asko washer/dryer set and am very pleased with its performance. The dryer is vented.

I've heard others say they like the ventless dryers. I've had no experience with ventless though.

It's got to be ventless.

If you have your heart set on Miele, go ahead an purchase the new washer and see if your dealer can locate a reconditioned dryer and/or perhaps a floor model.

Blomberg's have gotten decent reviews. Asko makes a nice one but they are a little pricey. Otherwise vented is pretty rare. Where are you located. I think I know of someone looking to move a 3-4 year old miele vented set.

Joe i was all set to get a Bosch axxis pair for a nyc apt then read that Blomberg introduced a new HEAT PUMP dryer. Sounds interesting-- but how difficult will it be to get a new Blomberg appliance serviced if necessary in NY?

In NY you will have no issues. The distributor services directly and they are very reliable in that term. Would not be afraid of blomberg in NY.

ev (or anyone), did you end up with the Blomberg? I went to the appliance store today to get a final list for our remodel and was planning on an Electrolux compact washer and dryer until the salesman brought up heat pump dryers. The Blomberg w&d seem nice on paper (washer claims a tiny bit more capacity and is listed as 240 volts, which I assume means a better water heater; dryer has "bi-directional drum action") and they're only about $330 more expensive. I'm curious about real-life experience and reliability of the Blombergs though.

Seems Asko, Bosch. Miele make very good compact washers. Only dis advantage I found was having to install 250v 15amp receptacle. The Whirlpool 24" I had 10 years ago was awful.

Thanks practigal, I didn't realize that there were vented compacts any more. Ideally, I'd like a ventless, and it sounds like heat pumps are a better technology than the standard condensing kind. The salesman I spoke with has Asko in addition to Blomberg, but he said the Askos are about $5k for the pair. Ouch.

I love the Electrolux compact washer if I were looking for a ventless dryer I would try their matching dryer... If it is possible to have a vented dryer with a short vent, I would do that first. With my one foot-long vent, the laundry dries super-fast...

There is another very recent thread on this machine and I've been waiting for you to post on that, but no luck. I am hoping you are linked to this thread and can comment. I'd also like to find out how you like the prewash setting and if it runs hot water into the wash if you have it on the hot setting. I think I would prefer a cool prewash, to manage stains, so I'd like to hear your take on this feature. In my Miele, the prewash is cold water. I need a new washer down the basement to replace the 28 year old Maytag, that is still working, but I'd like to upgrade now. Thanks

I had a second hand ASKO set that I loved, but the dryer kept dying on me. Service was in Saskatoon-several hours away. My Husband had enough, and we purchased a new Blomberg set. The dryer never worked right out of the box. Long story short, it was replaced, but not without several phone calls/emails. The washer is a little work horse, and does very well. Out of the 2, I prefer the ASKO as the wash and rinse options were more customizable. It also didn't shake the house apart when spinning. Crossing my fingers and hoping I have no further issues. Dryer is vented on the Blomberg as it was in the ASKO.

@cathy, have you checked that the washer is balanced? What is the machine set on? With my Miele, the instructions stated to place the machine against a load baring wall, unless its on a concrete slab. The placement against the load baring wall means that it will be at the end of a joist span and well supported. When placed in the center of a span it will be more likely to bounce like a trampoline.

^^Consumer Reports wrote recently that pretty much all compacts shake a lot, unfortunately. But your advice does make sense.

Sorry, Practigal, one more question: Do you stack the GE dryer on the Electrolux washer? I read Consumer Reports ranking of compact washers and dryers, and they rate the GE washer in the middle, but the dryer toward the top. I'm thinking of getting the Electrolux or Bosch 500 washer, but want to know if I could stack them. Appreciate the help.

No, mine are side by side. If I needed to stack them I would install a separate shelf for the dryer to rest on so that they could be independently serviced (although nothing has needed to be serviced so far).

As to what is doing the shaking, it is the washer, not the dryer. If the instructions for the washer tell you to place it in a corner or near joists be sure and follow those instructions.

My Miele compact does not shake. My previous Bosch compact, in a closet did not shake. The Bosch condenser dryer was a favorite of mine.

Rococo is correct a properly installed washer should not shake.

I have one caveat on the shaking. Our newly-installed Blomberg was moving its way several inches across the level floor every time I did a small load of towels, and it turns out that it's important to put in a very FULL load when you're washing large items that get water-logged and heavy so the machine can get everything distributed evenly around the drum. Doing that solved the problem.
