i'd say its working pretty well. what is in the closet? can the doors come off and one of the desks go in there?

a lighter color smaller in depth but still long enough couch might be nice but it wouldn't cure anything major.

If the closet is not being used, shelves or a 4-drawer file cabinet could be put in on at least part of it for supplies and miscellaneous stuff. An office supply armoire would be another useful addition for extras, and could also hold the printer/fax. Splitting the desks and running them the length of one wall, and placing shelving above, perhaps by trading the position of the sofa and desks, would allow easier access and free up floor space. If you use basic wall standards for the shelving, find an armoire second-hand, and leave the space as is except for the furniture swap, you might have enough left in the budget to surprise your honey with a beverage fridge, coffee maker and/or date night.

Long narrow-ish desk against wall opposite sofa. Take down all the small picture and mirror. Remove everything from book shelf and put in matching baskets, bins or boxes. If you need more organizing space add shelves above desk with matching baskets, bins or boxes. Try and make the room streamlined and free from visual clutter

The biggest bang per buck is to sort through everything, remove the extras, and keep it neat as a pin when showing. Rearranging as sooz001 says will be helpful, too. Remove the large personal artwork, diplomas, awards, etc. Paint off white or whatever other neutral you are using throughout the house. Nice telescope, by the way, it could be packed away to avoid damage during the sale period.

Hi Laura, when it comes to getting the most bang for your buck, have you thought about going the custom route? For example, an expert designer could collaborate with you and your husband to create the ideal office space - one that not only looks good, but that is incredibly functional, as well. With the right organizational structure (cabinetry, pullout keyboard trays, adjustable shelving etc.) the clutter can be cleared and your husband can get the job done.
