Loosestrife?

Everdebz, I agree. Purple loosestrife is considered an invasive species in much of the country. I guess it really is based on your perception and ability to keep it contained. I think it is a good looking plant.

It is loosestrife. Very invasive and terrible on farms where it blocks all the big O used in drainage.Liatris looks the same but is not invasive.

Loostrife is invasive because it re-seeds easily. . In a bed like this, it can be controlled by weeding, a pre-emergent, and mowing. I like it because it can be dried for winter bouquets.

I’ve grown purple loosestrife in the garden for decades and it has NEVER reseeded.....so it was news to me when they stopped selling it at garden centers years ago. I still continue to grow it in my garden.

Lots of other options, betony, Veronica, salvia, penstemon, phlox, lychnis, veronicastrum plus I am sure there are annual options like cleome, mallow, angelonia, verbascum etc. Purple loosestrife has become quite invasive here, it is unfortunately seen in wetlands everywhere, there are native ones and other garden ones as well which are fine. And people have known about it’s invasiveness for nearly as long as I can remember, 30 years?

I love hydrangeas, tall garden phloxes, roses, clematis and a few non-invasive perennials and annuals. I research everything before I buy because I like easy non-invasive gardening. Next year will be another great gardening season in PA! :-)

What are your favorite gardening forums for beginners, outside (convert lawn to something prettier and less monoculture) -trading mowing for weeding. Here on houzz or other options?
