Might be looking at gummosis.

Checked out your link Thanks. My question is that it seems like the tree has a Fungus problem and needs a cooper spray. Do you have any preferences as to which one to use?

i dont see any evidence of gummosis ...

and i dont see the root flare .. and a buried root flare is one cause of this ...

and i dont see at junkies link.. is that a copper spray is a remedy ...

this is extremely common on a large transplant.. due to field digging.. transporting.. transplanting.. etc ... as well as winter sun burn on if it hits that side of the trunk ...

as far as i am concerned.. there is nothing to do about it ...

I have a similar problem with a "Fiddle-leaf" Ficus. I know that the damage was caused by the careless use if a string trimmer. In another week or two, I plan to put a tree ring around the base and very gradually fill the ring with a good growing mix.

The thought is that adventitious roots will be encouraged; and maybe in a year or so, the tree can be transplanted and buried to the depth of this new root band. It is rather like air-layering - slightly modified.

I am banking heavily on the species' proclivity to (aerial) rooting.

Don't know how long you've had that tree, but the wound is quite old. The tree is developing wound wood (old term was "callus") at the edges of the wound in an attempt to cover it over.

though you got great info here.. you might get a wider discussion.. in the tree forum ... or not
