Kitchen dilemma! What should I do?

We just purchased a new home and I'm not in love with the most important room, the kitchen!
With limited funds, I need to figure out how to make this very cherry, traditional kitchen into a clean, current and warm kitchen.
Please ignore the nasty pink walls!
Here are some options/ideas I've thought up.
1. Paint the walls a warm grey, update cabinet hardware, and get grayish backsplash. Cheapest option and least amt of work
2. Option 1 and paint the cabinets white
3. Option 1 and paint the island a different color to break up all that cherry
4. Option 2 and replace countertops to a light color. Most expensive option.

Thoughts????

Paint a snazzy color in walls. Area rug to breakup cherry. I could never paint cherry!! Maybe change backsplash or island countertop?

Paint the walls a pale grey/ green and paint the island a warm white remove the valance above the sink and remove granite back splash and run new tile backsplash from counter up to the bottom of the upper cabinets and all the way up behind the stove a nice set of 2 or 3 pendants above island and a big bowl of green apples on the island.

Even cheaper and easier, I would: 1.) paint the walls. 2) remove wood valance, great suggestion from Patricia! 3) Hang a roman blind over the window. Your ideas are great, but you might not even have to go that far. Do it in stages, (you might wish to look at Edgecombe Gray a Benjamin Moore color) and see if you can live with the cabinets. Once you paint you may change your mind about the other items in the room.

Suggestion would be to paint the kitchen and change the upper cabinets and the hood. That Way your chanching the kitchen whitout a big renovation. Pick some cabinets with glass and that goes all the Way up to the ceeling. Paint the lover and upper cabinets in different shades.
