Wondering what type of material to use for stair railing that will be painted white? Also recommendations for painted white door trim and baseboards? All will be in basement.

Poplar, maple, or pine would all be great choices for all! Check pricing & availability in your area. All of these three paint well & hold up very well for a railing and trim.

I make a lot of custom trim to replicate missing antique baseboards, chair rail moldings, wainscoting, etc. I use poplar about 90% of the time.

I would be cautious about using poplar in a basement. It is an unstable wood, and tends to warp with environmental (humidity) changes. I would recommend soft maple.
