Snapped Fiddle Leaf Fig

Hi All,

This afternoon I took my Fiddle Leaf Fig to the nursery for them to repot it. I had three new leaves on the top about (50cm of new growth) and as the man was trying to lift it into our car he snapped all of our beautful new growth off. (Absolutely heartbroken)

I didn't have the heart to get mad with him, as he was clearly struggling to get the heavy pot into the car & was an accident.

Does anyone know what will happen to my tree now? Will it keep growing from the snap point? Im new to Fiddle Leaf Fig growing & am worried that is has caused detrimental damage to our very much loved tree!

Honestly, it depends on growing conditions. If yours is getting a lot of light it could possibly branch into two or maybe three branches at the point of the break, or it may only start one new leader again.

In any case, it will be fine. It should resume growth real soon, since they start to 'kick in' about this time with longer day lengths (assuming you are in Northern Hemisphere).

These plants grow pretty quickly and they soon outgrow your house, so you'd likely have to prune it within a few years anyway. Yours just got pruned a bit sooner rather than later!

If you REALLY want to see fast growth, set it outside in a sheltered, shady spot over the summer (unless you live in the hot desert). It could easily put on 2 feet or more of growth.

Yes, agree with Dave on all points. I'd maybe take my pruning shears and get rid of the stub. Just cut it a little closer to the point where the top leaves now originate. Nothing tricky or fancy. Other than that-and especially the part about placing outdoors in the shade somewhere-you'll be golden. You want to see houseplants grow quickly and healthy, do that!

what they said.. but you might try the houseplant forum ... and perhaps there is a fig forum ...

i would have found out.. if you could have rooted the broken off part ...

you couldnt have done worse.. repotting it yourself ... think about that ...

Thanks so much for your very helpful info guys! Hopefully, it will kick off soon. As for the broken off part, I have started to reroot it & can't wait to see how it goes,

Repotting is really very straight forward, so next time you could save yourself money and hassle by doing it yourself, as Ken suggests. The House Plant Forum can tell you how.
