What kind of flooring is this? What is your advice on wood floors in a basement?

I have seen a lot of laminate flooring done in this colour. It looks and feels (and is!)cheaper than the timber-laminate (almost plastic-y, but much better than the old-style laminate used to be) but apparently wears a lot better, which would be good for a space like a basement. However if it is scratched it cannot be sanded back like timber or timber-laminate to repair.

Also, being installed over concrete, laminate is the only real option for wood.

Engineered flooring would work fine over concrete. A high quality engineered floor can even be finished on site just like a solid floor.

Right, but it's still "engineered"... or laminate... as opposed to solid hardwood, which absorbs moisture and can warp or buckle and as a result isn't a good choice on concrete.

Agreed. Especially below grade (basements etc).
