Sorry about duplicated photos!!! But you can probably get the idea of the room, settee and chair need to stay, need tv unit, was thinking long one under window but with tv still angled into the room?? Or would corner unit be better? Was thinking about fitting a bookcase into fire place?

You know, I've seen images where people stack the void fireplace full of books in different with the spine inwards, so the pages are facing outward. It might look good, or not at all- I can't say for sure.....I would set some candles inside. If you back the fireplace with mirror, it will add some depth to the room. A large piece of art above the fireplace would be great too.

I think those accessories would look great here. My last idea would be some stationary drapery panels for the window. Have fun!

How are the position of the chair and settee? What about something for end of settee?

Here are some different ideas for your windows:

1- If you want to go bold with color, the orange will really warm up the space and be a great mid-tone to the sofa

2- grey is a great modern neutral to balance your brown leather sofas

3- this is a personal favorite of mine at the moment. The hand-drawn look of it feels authentic, and a bit playful

4- in the neutral family , so it will blend with your walls but still has an organic pattern which I like, a bit imperfect

I think I have a visual of what the room looks like from your photos, on the smaller side. I see the chair is pulled away from the wall. Is that for a reason? If not, I would put the chair back, and pair the ottoman with it. Then find a coffee table for the loveseat. Maybe 2 of those Lack coffee tables also at Ikea? It would give you a hard surface to set things, without another large piece of furniture in your space. I'm doing that in my home too. Or what about these nesting tables?

The chair is pulled away from the wall because its a walkway between the hall and the kitchen, it just seemed easier than having to walk round the chair, i could try it i suppose..... The nesting tables look really cute, fab for putting drinks on, would i still put something to the side of settee? For a lamp etc? All the curtains would look great in here, like the two patterned ones best i think, do you think they would look good with the rug you recommended? Definitely going to get that, need to measure up. This is the view between the two doorways, normally have the chair pushed a bit more forward but my daughter was making a big traintrack in middle of room

Hi Julie, I was wondering if you're able to run the tv cable to the wall where you settee is right now? (If you can get white cable, you can run it up and down the corners of the room to get it over to the opposite wall)

If you were thinking of putting settee under window?? Ive just measured and it would just about squish in between cupboard door and radiator but it would be a tight squeeze, and it would be a bit big going across the room opposite fire place, there would be hardley any walking room.....

Heres a pic of my old area rug which ive taped off in the size of the new rug i want, its not as big and if it sits square in front of settee it wont butt up to chair legs and fire hearth, will this look ok or does it need to be bigger? Are there rug rules that should be followed??

Hi again- If the sofa can fit on the window wall (even if it's not centered under the window), here are two options I was thinking about to open up the passageway between the two doors. I lean towards Option 2

That was so smart to tape out the rug! As far as "rules", one way is to have everything overlap it by a few inches. Another way is to have it just barely touching the furniture. It doesn't not have to take up the whole floor. The rug is to ground the seating area, so I don't think it needs to reach over to the tv.

Thankyou so much for the drawings, i doubt my husband will go for option 2, he thinks you need to see the telly from all chairs!! But we both love the idea of moving the telly to opposite wall, going to get it done this weekend which means i will only be one step away from getting him to try the chair in the corner plus went to ikea yesterday, really disappointed because they didnt have the rug or the cushions you recomended in stock, not getting the rug in til next month!! They did have one hanging on the wall though and it looks fab!! And i got a couple of other cushions that i thought would look great, will post pics in a bit, hope you like them, didnt get round to looking at curtains as didnt have enough time so still got nothing up at the window

Forgot to say the other blue cushions i got from ikea had to be returned because the zips were faulty

Well, good luck this weekend with the makeover. Well, a month will come and go before you know it for the rug. You've been busy at IKEA. I think it will all come together. And let me know what your husband thinks about the chair in the corner- you never know :) It will open up the walkway, so he might just change his mind. Have fun!

This looks great and love the TV on the wall opposite the sofa. Adds balance to room.

When you do curtains, might want to do the 95 inch instead of 84 inch and hang then at the top where the ceiling and wall meet. And extra panels will add volume and richness. Two on each side instead of one on each side.

Maybe consider covering your ottoman in a pretty graphic print, with one of the print colors matching the curtain color.

The trimmed in space above fireplace looks like a perfect spot for a large painting or artifact or basket or wall hanging or area rug. Target has some good things that might work? Or of course IKEA!

And lamps on small table would be necessary. Go with big, fat, chunky, heavy lamps with textured lampshades. Nothing spindly. One big corner table with one big lamp between chair and settee. Your furniture is really strong looking and all the others things in the room will have to balance that. Nothing leggy or spindly please; it will look insignificant. You do not need a lot in this room but each piece should count!

You might consider hanging some type of trailing spilling plants on those clever door panels on either side of the fireplace to bring something organic in the room, or even vertical mirrors? Brainstorming here.

Again what ever you put over the fireplace find something complementary to go over the sofa. Pair of large modern art prints unframed, then basket on fireplace. Carved work over sofa then painting over fireplace. And big. Thanks for letting me visit your room. You sound so excited and happy to be doing this! Cannot wait to see the finished product.

So sarahrose, today was the big day of swapping tv and sofa, didnt last long, sofa didnt fit, i never realised but the two spaces on either side of fireplace are different sizes so the settees legs were up on the fireplace hearth and when we pulled it forward so legs were infront of hearth it had to come even further forward into the room because the radiator was in the way, if that made sense to you, looked a bit odd and out of place, was disappointed, its a bit of a big old unit our settee!! Back to original layout. So things ive still got to think about, tv unit, table at side of settee?? Already decided on nesting tables, artwork? thankyou for your input soosun2, love the fabric, might be nice to cover ottoman will have to look into cost, plus the wooden carving would look great in here, im in the uk so no target here but could find something similar

I havent really found a tv unit im love with, my husband likes the three drawer hemnes tv bench in the grey brown but theyve stopped doing, apparently they are changing the style slightly and doing a pine colour instead of the grey brown, so i might wait and see what its like, dont want the black brown, will wait and see what the pine is like, not sure if i would like the white?? Any thoughts about it?

For one of the walls i was wondering if i could get away with a bit of a collection?? Family photos, small pictures i like, a small mirror, carvings.....something that would start off small and could be added to in the future as and when i come across things i like, would this look a bit messy? I like lots if stuff and i know sometimes i can go over the top, will try and find a pic of something im thinking of

Collection for collection sake is trite, but I think you could do a small group of pics....maybe of family members. I owuld study collection walls on Houzz to find a rhythym you like. IKEA has some great frame/mat combos that would look lovely in the room. If you have an entry area I think a collections looks great in that area too. But I think a pair of prints will be more economical and more striking.

I think you need a dynamic object in your room that will be a focal point that every one will see and go, OOoooh so strikiing etc.

Im afraid i can be a bit of a maggpie lol i like the colours of that unit but prefer wood for the larger pieces of furniture, will have a look for some other art work i like, do you think a modern abstract type would work better?

The bigger the better! But art should be what you like.....when I have been on trips away from home I always try and buy a print that reflects the artist of the area. Over the years all my prints end up being of people. So follow your instincts and buy what you love and what makes you happy. As I walk thru my home all those prints of people me ME happy. That is the cool thing about art, there is just so much that is sooo good.

I love your TV stand; it looks very nice with your end table. I do think your lamp needs to be about 30 percent bigger than you are showing, though. You can try a bigger one and see if you like the scale or not and can alwyas return the lamp. And a floor lamp on the other end of the sofa. Design is so much trial and error and there is so much out there to choose from it can be daunting and tiring!

I just realized the carpet on your floor is the exact same carpet I have on my floor, but I have it in a bathroom. I love all the colors in it and I think you should select one of the brightest colors in the rug and use that as an accent in your room. Pillows, art work or matting the artwork, flowers in the room, tray for keys, an end table, just have three areas of this spot of color to add balance and interest to the room to give it impact and not look like a store display.

Curtains on the window in linen or white woven; or another idea for curtains is to cover the lower 2/3 or the window with a curtain rod all the way across the window and put a curtain on that to cover the window and add opaqueness behind the TV so it isn't so jarring on the eyes. We call them cafe curtains in the US: google them and see if you might like the look for your window. Adds light and privacy.

I love the saris, very beautiful, every time i come into the room i can see the lamp (and end table) are too small!!! Table was on offer though which i why i got it, will try bigger lamp first and see if that fixes problem, finally got some curtains but havent done much else

I see soosun2 offered linen as a suggestion for drapery. You could use also use linen as a sheer to provide a backdrop to the tv so bright light is filtered a bit coming into your room, without losing sunlight altogether. Then maybe you can push it in a few inches away from the left edge of the tv bench?

Yes i did use linen curtains, tried to take a photo but phone so rubbish you couldnt really see them, having something else to filter the light would be nice i think, it does get very bright

And yes change is hard work!!!! Need to get motivated again

Yea...taking photos of windows can be tricky with lighting...If you need more light filtering than just the linen curtains, you may want to consider a double bracket to hang two rods, so you can add another layer, a white liner might do the trick if you still want light to come in
