Many of these are sold as grafted specimens, and the shoots that come up from the root stock (below the graft) are not contorted. You should cut those out. Mine was a grafted plant as well but when the voles almost killed it, I moved it, and when it grew back the root stock was gone and I had an own root plant. Since then all my suckers have been contorted.
