updating dining room need HELP

Moved from a very open country cottage style to a 1920 home. This set was in the kitchen, but now as a dining room set it doesn't go with the rest of the house or furniture. Have thought about having it painted, as I just don't like the oak, as I said it just doesn't go with the rest of the house. The dining room is small, and is open to the living room and family room, looking to somehow update the look without having to buy a new set. Really need Help any suggestions would be great, I am open to anything . Thank You.

instead of updating the whole thing I think you just need new chairs for the table. New chairs an updated table scape will do wonders. As for the hutch, can you remove the top? The top part is what gives it the country feel. I would remove the top and put a piece of art work on the wall over it to compliment the rest o the room.

I had a very similar table That I painted the top of. I added wicker chairs. I will try and dig up a photo for you.

These three pictures are three different styles. Your table is great, I might also either stain darker or paint it. I agree with the previous suggestion of changing out the chairs so I included three different styles chairs to give you an idea of what that would look like. Good luck!

Like these chairs, what if I had the top of the table sanded and finished in a lighter oak and had the pedestal painted black ???? with different chairs, or chairs painted black ??

I like the chair options that have been shown by other readers. You might also try IKEA, if you have one nearby. They usually have some pretty sleek (and cheap!) ones that won't fight your other decor choices. Good luck!

Patch, that sounds good. What part of the country do you live in? I see the white on the trim around the doors & if you're trying to update your look all you need to add are a few contemporary pieces. Like canvas wall art, textures in your accessories & mixing
contemporary pieces & traditional pieces your get transitional, which is current.

Live in the mid Atlantic states, going to check all the suggestions and ck with someone to re-finish the table. Can't remove the top of the hutch as suggested by another reader, so think the table change would make a difference , any suggestions on the side table in front of the window ?

I would not painted the golden oak table. The finish looks in good condition and nice as is. If you want a different look change out the press back chairs as they give a very country look to the whole room. You can put almost any type of chair with an oak pedestal table.

If you want to change the look of the room even more, replace the golden oak sideboard with something more contemporary and/or change the chandelier.

See what you mean, good ideas and pictures, side hutch has been in family for ever and removal would distress hubby for sure. chairs would really make the difference. Love the pictures you sent, the table takes on a whole different look, also different chandelier. What do you think about the side table in front of the window, should I think about painting it a different color ? Many thanks

Just ordered 6 parson chairs in beige material, thank you all for your comments, will post pictures for an update when they arrive. Still need help with the side table any suggestions would be great.
