A large rectangular piece of art that you love

Your art is beautiful, but feels a bit too small for the space. However, if you want to keep it there, I would definitely consider wall sconces similar to the pictures below. Since your mantel is narrow, I wouldn't add too much on top of it. Keep it simple.

I agree with the others that the art is beautiful but may not be a good fit there. Consider a longer artwork. I have some listed. Check them out. Sample below. Enjoy decorating!

I am familiar with RC Gorman, as I live in New Mexico, but I sure wouldn't use any type of crystal scones next to it. Also, when you do find sconces, please hang then centered on the vertical sides of the art and about 6-8" away from the picture.

As another New Mexican, I too love the Gorman. I just don't think this location does it the justice it deserves.

Hola, Carol! I think it would show better with an art lamp at the top, so the relief would show more.

I am a fan of Gorman (bought my first one in NJ...I think the prints have wide appeal). I think the piece over the mantel is too small. Maybe you need a larger print. This one is a $50 poster I had framed. I bought it from the RC Gorman Gallery. There are several muted ones that could be a companion piece to the artwork that you have. Place it elsewhere in your room.

do the recessed cans have eye ball trim? if not get that, so you can actually aim a light on the art. then i would create a semi college wall, kind of like above but a bit less busy.

What about branches and mirror per photo?

turn the mirror the other way maybe, and then put the vase in front of the mirror. I would also raise the sconces to the middle of the mirror, and put the vase in front of the mirror.

You might try a pair of wall sconces either side of the art in proportion to the available space
2 large urns on the mantle
1 large orchid plant in the center or two regulars side by side to represent 1 whole piece

Looks so pretty massanova! Love your sconces and mirrors...and really love the large vase with flowers on the left side. Like the idea of keeping things symmetrical, though. What about 2 large vases or urns on each side of the painting as suggested by anne dee?

if yr mantle can't hold large round vases you might consider a pair of Moonflasks which have a narrow base. submitting blue and white to coord with the blue chairs but any colour you pull from the room wuld do.

It feels to me as if a bit of dramatic wall paint is needed - it does wonders even for such lovely sophisticated look you are aiming for - how about a bit of deep turquoise - some of the pictures from the previous posts have that exact color in. It could let your wall piece stand out as well as the chairs. I also agree with adding generally more pics on the wall - "gallery". But would not go symmetrical. Good luck! Art is not shown to best advantage in this location. Maybe on the wall to the right, hung lower, where it is approachable. Maybe with a small shallow console under it. Then find a larger, horizontal watercolor, color but not harsh, to put over the mantel. Others ideas for some objects are great. Move the chairs apart a little more, maybe an ottoman in between with a throw on it (texture). Another round table by other chair, for drinks and two floor apothecary lamps, for light and the shine of metal. Two patterned lumbar pillows on chairs. Area rug, size dependent on rest of room.. I would add pictures or other helpful items but don't know how.

I like the art gallery look. But, shopping for art is the hardest thing for me. We are thinking about built in bookshelves on either side or stone work longer term. Which do you think would look better.

I LOVE Nancy Walton's suggestion. Simple, cost-effective, an elegant choice which respects the OP's statement that she wants the piece there.

I agree that a brighter painting would be a better focal point, but I understand you want that one there. So what do you think about a row of 3, with yours one one side, find something similar for the other side, and a brighter more colorful one in the middle?

How about black wrought iron candle holders with blue candles on your mantel....maybe two on one side and one on the other? And also you could try a low ivy-like plant on one side Black would match the fireplace.

Looks nice but those 4 round mirrors [it that what that is?] are way too small. You need to go big here with that big huge wall and long mantle. I would use larger sconces and something with some visual weight like colored glass or wrought iron as mentioned above. A darker accent color on that wall could help too. As it is the sconces and clear glass almost fade into the wall. I really like the idea of a gallery wall but understand it is hard to find the right pieces and takes time. Good luck! (:

Great suggestions by Stone Home Design. Agree, Massanova, that you need to keep your beautiful and meaningful print and just build from it. Ran across this picture, and thought of your mantel. Love that objects are not symmetrical. Good luck and keep us posted.

This may be a little out there and a little rough looking but thought if you used a couple of mirrors with simple lines on either side and paint the wall behind in a darker colour would make the picture stand out. I would also use an area rug on the floor as well to tie it all together.

and Consultant, I have found that one striking focal design placed above a fireplace
mantel works really well, which draws the eye to that section of the room and
could certainly be a conversational point of discussion for guests; as I have
discovered, art comes in many forms, not just in a frame as shown in your
example, though lovely placed elsewhere.

In my example shown, the arrangement
can be simply made with the appropriate size vase, branches or greenery
arranged according to the width and depth of the fireplace; in this regard, with
symmetry, simplicity, color and an artistic flair, you can’t go wrong making an
outstanding focal point above your fireplace.

Due to the length of the
mantel shown in your photo, a little corresponding art on the side would also
enhance the fireplace and wall plus still remain sophisticated.

For fireplace units that do not have a dedicated area, we always suggest elongating the fireplace from floor to ceiling. Natural stone veneers are a great way to do this as it does not require a mason or demolition, or even acheiving the look with stone and paint can make a big impact. Hi, the stone on the bottom photo is ErthCOVERINGS Sydney Yellow 3D (14F) you can see more information here . It was a new fireplace unit the homeowners had and the stone was built out around it to make it a focal point on the wall, image is from HGTV's Leave It To Bryan.

I think you could find another place for the art piece and add a very large painting or art and add some fantastic printed pillows for the chairs

Hi ,I've read most of the responses.I really like the mirrors you have there,it brings balance to the piece of art unique.If I may suggest that the mantle could be painted a light brown(wood look) and the stone work that you mentioned below the mantle.Then the fire place wouldn't stand out so much good luck I have confidence you will do well with what you choose those people sure have good ideas

I have been pondering your dilemma some more, and I have a possible suggestion.
Could you create a larger "frame" around your Gorman out of trim that matches what goes around the fireplace box. Then paint the inside of that a color that will compliment your room and make the Gorman stand out. Then hang the Gorman inside.

I was trying to find a picture of what I mean, and nothing is quite right. The attached photo is of a frame within a frame, but not quite the look you want for your lovely piece.

I think the mantel is lovely. It looks clean, and the focus is on the beautiful piece of art. It's perfect. The sconces and mirrors are a perfect addition.
