Color advice

last modified: 11 years ago

We've just updated our little kitchen and though i'm happy with the outcome, something just isn't right.
Please see before (reddish walls with honey oak cabinets) and after.
Is it the wall paint?
The upper cabinets?
The matching paint color on soffetts?
Some advice please.

The blue wall color on the soffits would look better against both the cabinets and the ceiling color.

I agree that something is off. The color of the walls & soffit need to tie the wall & base cabinets together in some way. I don't think the blue is doing the trick. Maybe something lighter in a grey or you could try to tile the backsplash with something that would pick up both colors. I would definitely change the color of the soffit to be different from the wall cabinets. Good Luck!!

We did try the blue wall color on the soffits, but it just didn't look right either. I think that blue is all wrong, we were tying for a lighter color that complemented the lower cabinets.
What do you think of painting the upper cabinets same as lower ones and painting the walls the current upper cabinet color? OR Should we just change all together the walls and upper cabinets. Color suggestions encouraged.

What color are your lower cabinets, espresso? All I can tell from the picture is that they're dark. Anyway, yes, it's the blue walls that aren't working. I think it's because of the countertop. The blue just doesn't mesh with that, so it feels like this odd block of color separating the upper cabinets from the counter. You need something that will pull those together. Either a warm color or a neutral would probably work well. Oh and I like the white soffits. I'd leave those as is, at least until you've got a different color on the walls. Then decide if you want to leave them white or paint them to match the walls.

White soffits would be much better.

I wouldn't worry about painting the soffit to match the upper cabinets. I would keep it the color of the ceiling. I think the countertop would blend better with the color of the upper cabinets. Maybe painting the lowers the same as the uppers, change the soffit to match the ceiling and then tile the wall, or paint it a different color from the other 2, but not blue.

Ah, okay. Now that I know what colors you've got going on there, it makes even more sense why the blue isn't working. It's just too bold of a cool color to have in between the slight warmth of the counter and the wheat uppers. I still suggest looking for a warm or a neutral for the walls and then bring the blue in as an accent (curtains, pictures, etc). But if you want blue for the walls, a lighter and subtler blue would work better (maybe more of a blue-grey or blue-green?).

Maybe paint the lower cabinets white, paint or change hardware. The bottom fades into the floor, so this would lengthen it all.
