That is how I'm leaning - staggered on wall, diagonal on floor. It is comforting to receive affirmation from a pro. We are recent empty nesters and plan to sell in the next four years so I am concerned with resale value more than my personal aesthetics. :)

I have done both to equal effect. It boils down to the look you want. The idea of large square tiles nowadays is to create space, but sometimes the smaller rectangular tiles help to visually widen or lengthen a bathroom.

In one bathroom I used rectangular tiles to visually lengthen the room and up the side of the bath when entering the bathroom

In the basement bathroom I used wood look ceramic planks to widen the bathroom galley.

Look at photos on Houzz with this in mind and you will soon see how each tiling pattern does serve to create a different illusion of width/length and space.
