It's tough to vote. I'm a huge advocate of making the kitchen a place that is truly yours. If you are happy with the layout but think you just need a paint job, then that's that. But, if you feel that these kitchen cabinets and the layout isn't really "you" then I would absolutely vote for a full redesign. Here are some ideas, I hope it helps! :)

If you don't like it...you don't like it. Of course it is heart braking to remove "new"...it always feels so wasteful.

I don't mind the granite but the oak cabs are a little boring. This style of cabinet facing looks VERY handsome when painted out. White is an option...but a gray or light blue will work very nicely.

Personally I would look at keep the granite and the cabinets but I would look to changing out the floors and painting the cabinets. That is plenty of work for a new home. Once you get the "look" right you can then gather up more money to update the appliances at another time.

Flooring that works with the counter top will help dictate where to go with the cabinetry (what colour). Go floor shopping (take photos of the granite to remind you what colours to look for) to get inspiration. Go "kitchen" shopping to get inspiration. Put the two together to come up with options for this space without having to go through a complete gut job.

The "blue" lights are also something I'm not fond of...because there is nothing else there to offer support for the blue. Eventhough SOME of this kitchen is "new"...much of it is older or old fashioned (helps keep costs down when you use "out of fashion" stuff). I would say this kitchen was updated to sell the home...on a limited budget (most for the least).

You have full overlay cabinets which is awesome! Just paint, no need to replace. Yay!

I would paint the cabinets and change/upgrade the floor.

On the cheap: Paint cabinets for sure and add some nice hardware to them. Add a backsplash, paint walls, update lighting pendants. If budget allows, add crown moulding, upgrade appliances and flooring.

So far I found a grey laminate wood floor that will help, I think!

Gave the contractor the old kitchen! LOL!

The floor is the main problem,

Don't be in a hurry to change just for the sake of change.

In a new house there are always a million things that need doing.

If this area is the one that needs the most attention, then think and plan it out well.

And if you decide to paint and don't have a lot of painting experience, then perhaps there is something less major than a kitchen full of cabinets that you can practice on.

There are also many paint treatments.

Sleek and smooth, chalk painted, or painted and glazed are some.

Distressed chalk paint or glazing will bring out the details in your cabinets.

I would say hire a professional, but I have seen a lot of shoddy work passing for professional.

Hi nmungo22 -- a new floor will be a huge improvement, as will paint. Your counters are nice; I'd just make sure that your choices work with it.

Paint the cabinets white or gray, change the flooring and do a back splash in a medium tone possibly a natural stone type would look good.

If you really do not like the cabinets then I would paint or stain them. If the cabinets do not bother you as much then start with the flooring and then if needed to the cabinets. The flooring looks the most outdated. A fresh coat of paint always helps as well. Good Luck! Have fun and make it your own!!

If it were my kitchen, I would start with the floor, i.e., get the floor replaced, then decide what else needs to be done. A better floor will make a huge improvement, and the rest of the kitchen might not need to be replaced.

I think it's a bad idea to do the floors first. In some cases, the cabinets should be removed to put flooring all the way across, or else you'll have a transition step/piece where it connects to other flooring I hall or other room.

I had my existing hardwood kitchen floors sanded down and stained to match my new hardwood on rest of main floor. And I found an amazing company to professionally spray my cabinets white (from a 15 year old maple Colour). New hardware & backsplash and bam! A new kitchen.

We hated the color of our cabinets but they were nice cabinets so we painted them (professionally) and put new hardware on. We however kept the existing floors. Love our kitchen now. I agree that putting new floors in can be complicated without putting them under the cabinets. But, it can be done.
