Fireplace makeover in Mediterranean Revival

We just bought a historic Mediterranean Revival in Florida that had an addition added in the '80s with a sunken living room and a blah fireplace. Looking for ideas -- thinking built-in bookshelves on each side of the fireplace perhaps. And maybe a chunky wooden mantle and Spanish tile around the opening, with matching Spanish tile along the bottom of the step into the adjacent dining room? Would love ideas!

We are embracing the Mediterranean Revival style of the house's exterior but unfortunately there isn't much left of the original interior elements.

I love it. Great chimneys. Everything that you mentioned I think are all wonderful ideas. The built-ins will only be able to go to the window casing on the right. Will that be deep enough for you? A lovely reclaimed old barn wood beam would be good for the mantle or a live edge piece of wood. Hey, cute kitty. Will you be able to add a hearth to the fireplace? So much fun. Please give us photos of the whole room.
