In my experience, yes, to some extent it is. If your kitchen is where you do most of your chatting with your children, or talk on the phone, you might want to think twice. Of course, you can always pause the machines if you need to, but it's not always convenient to pause the dryer. If your house is tight on space, putting the laundry in the kitchen can be a good move, because you can use the tops as extra counter space. Otherwise, though, if I were putting them in the kitchen I'd build a cabinet around them to muffle the noise.

Thanks. I was wondering about that. We have another option. But I loved your photos so I thought I'd ask.

As the designer of this space I wanted to weigh in on the discussion of how noisy the washer and dryer are in the kitchen. When my clients purchased the house the washer and dryer were already in the kitchen but in a very awkward layout inside separate closets. The clients came to like the convenience of the location of the machines and moving them to the basement or second floor was not an option so we worked them into the layout of the kitchen renovation and expansion. Noise isn't an issue for them as the machines are pretty quiet I would suggest using "second floor approved" machines if you are concerned about noise. I believe Electrolux makes them. And I would recommend not putting them behind doors because it becomes a hassle when loading and unloading. Hope that info helps!

I have my washer and dryer in my kitchen enclosed in cabinets. As stated by Hammond Design, it is a hassle with the doors when loading and unloading.
