You can pickle the wood for a farmhouse feeling but this house is very contemporary. The fireplace is wonderfully rustic . . so I can see it happening the space is wonderful . ..

Study swedish design - if you went sort of swedish farmhouse I think it can work in this sort of modern gothic chapel architecture

Do consider before you put down a wood floor - a blond wood floor is the only one I think will work for you well . . .you could do a warm cork floor however and put down thick rugs on top to define your areas.

My advice . to maintain the integrity but give you the feel you want . . keep the wood trim around the windows but pickle the walls - use a taupe tone (not gray, not beige but greige - something like bm gray mirage http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/graymirage

paint the drywall walls the same - (use this watered down 1/3 water/ 2/3 paint on the wood)

.Great suggestion libradesigneye As you 'whitewash' keep in vertical
motion. This is a wonderful space, very light, and open. The stone
mantle has a lot of character and gives a comfee rustic feel. I will
post a few photos of the difference just by finishing to look like driftwood(similar to 'white washing) one wood focal element made
a lot of difference in this project

She can do simple shaker style furniture in a modern home beautifully though - the house will still be modern, and you have to admit that is the least contemporary looking fireplace you ever saw . . if someone told you this was a swedish farmhouse (after the wood was washed) you would buy it . . it is all about proportions and colors . . get some chalk paint in the soft blues from annie sloan and some in drabware colors and paint a bunch of clean lined things . . carefully select linen and duck slipcovers . . it will all balance.

No, I dont think I would buy it-probably because the style of this home makes me green with envy-and stone fireplaces are VERY common in modern homes of that era. The house will always be modern which is the reason that I think that trying to do farmhouse style is going to result in design confusion. I don't think modern furnishings are necessarily required but I firmly believe that architecture cannot be ignored in interior design if cohesiveness is desired.

This looks like a perfect Usonian / Eichler house. Take advantage of the great architecture you have. The McMichael Art Gallery is a perfect example of taking advantage of this great architectural style in a casual design giving a modern country feel.
