Question is vague -- do you want to modernize it in terms of style or function? What do you like or dislike currently? What is your overall style, and what is your budget/level of ambition for this project?

Hard to tell here if you're just looking for a paint color, or a starting point for some kind of redesign... (Any way you look at it, I 'd get rid of that fluorescent fixture and get some decent task lighting in there!)

Adding a blue and green backsplash will help you get that modern beachy look. A new light fixture will also help. If you want to go all the way some stainless steel appliances would look amazing.

Light fixture should be replaced, along with your beige switches and receptacles. Your cupboard knobs will also make a difference. Once you've done these small things, look at it again and see how you feel.

Inject personality with accessories and glass cabinets like pic 1! Add pop of color! And yes, perhaps a funky backsplash as suggested!
