Boxwood Blight

At a garden i visited person has planted a long row of boxwood with what appears to be boxwood blight. Many plants have dead or brown branches. Part shade, also irrigation system used , possible soil too wet.

Need to replace. Has anyone had experience with replanting these English boxwood with improved cultivar. Additionally correcting watering practice.

might also try this in the shrub forum ... boxwood arent really conifers ...

but ... where are you and the box???

2 severe winters here in MI .... have been very hard on BW ... how did you/they come to the conclusion ... its a disease process ...

and secondly ... why is this person going to beat their head on the same wall ... and do the same thing again??? ..

there are many garden dreams i gave up on .. over the years ...??? .. as the wall became much too bloody from self inflicted torture

Thanks for quick reply Ken and Gardengal . Ken, there is a really good base of knowledgeable people on the conifer forum and although they are not "conifers" I believed I would get a better response here. However I will try shrubs.

I have not tested for blight. It could be bad case of winter kill. There are lots of brown dead branches and I can also see that the soil conditions are not ideal. I am not sure the existing damaged plants can not stay through - they look bad, and appearance is important. . With that said, the owner, likes boxwood because it looks good in their formal garden so that would be their first choice, but they are willing to try something new ( it just needs to be formal) .

I have read on some sites, a small listing of boxwood that may not be susceptible to the blight. Also talked to one nursery who offered a different cultivar, So before buying , I thought it would be good to start here and ask.

My choice first was Ilex glabra, due the soil conditions, but it does get a little too wide for the location, next favorite was Ilex crenata, although in our area ( central PA zone 6b ) there has been some problems ( maybe due to improper care by homeowner, but not always a strong grower. ) .

So - I was just looking to see if there was any boxwood lovers - that may be in have planted new and improved cultivars and had some luck.

For years a common headache with box has been root rot. What might be happening in this case depends on looking closely at the symptoms and maybe some lab work also, which you might be able to get done through an Extension Service office - if there is one covering your area that provides this.

==>>> then all power to ya ... many of these same peeps hang in the tree forum .. as conifers are trees ...

and SOME of them make it to shrub ... but there are a few shrub freaks i never see in these forums ...

so its not about you posting in the wrong forum.. its about shotgunning all the peeps that might help ...

and then of course.. there is embo .. who seems to be everywhere ... lol
