Can you stencil the wall behind the TV with small motifs and preferably paint that wall a different color. these things make a huge difference in dressing up a room.

I agree with a larger piece of furniture for the TV to sit on. Something a good bit longer, not much taller and not too deep that would hide cords, provide storage and balance better. Hard to tell from the picture but it looks like one of the sofas is blocking a window. Could the sofas be flip flopped to the other side of the room and have the chair in front of the window? Then maybe add some neutral colored drapes if you want to stick to a neutral colored theme or add color with drapes, throw pillows and a few prints on the walls (over the sofa on the stairwell wall and on the TV wall).

Are both of the sofa's the same length in dimensions? Surely you have
already rearranged or else you wouldn't be asking for solution ? :)

TanCalGal as other's agreed another option is a chest-style cabinet stand +
storage for your television wall. Take a look at the space between the coffee
table and the stand? Not much space is there?

Mushi52 may have the solution and that is somehow moving that t.v. on the
stair wall. How long are your cable extensions? Then again you are back to the
cable wires being an eye sore = move the sofa up on that wall?

The best solution for more room and space would be to install the t.v. on
the wall and eliminate the large square coffee table. (Note:TV $Expensive to
Repair) Place the sofa where the t.v. and table were and place some of your
favorite artwork above the sofa. I think you will be very surprised as to how
the room will flow better. Is that an additional coffee side table to left of
arm chair?

Tom Wooldridge's idea of complimentary colors with drapes and throw pillows
would be wonderful. With the fabric choices and wall coloring you have plenty of
colors to choose from. Go with a small print/pattern as Tom suggests.

Problem is, no matter where you put that tv, you're going to get light glare from that window.
What's the big blue piece of furniture? It takes a lot of space and matches nothing. Do you really need the seating it provides?
I'd get a large piece of wood furniture to encase or hold the tv entirely, maybe with curios on each side that you can put a few colorful books and some colorful geegaws on.

Then get pillows and curtains to match the colors of the geegaws. Easy Peasy!!!

Would you consider wallpapering the wall with the TV? I really think it would give your room a completely new feeling!

Do you need both couches? I'd keep one and get a coordinating chair (would be great if you could get another chair like you already have) Place the couch facing the tv wall and put a sofa table behind it with a lamp. Put the chairs on either side of coffee table. Ikea has beautiful full wall entertainment centers,that would be nice where the tv is,and a round coffee table would soften it up also.

You need to move the beige sofa to the wall where the tv is now. The armchair can stay put, a small table between the two for a lamp will make it cozy at night. Also provides a place to put you cuppa and whatever. Put the tv on a chest, any chest will do, and put that in front of the window which will eliminate any glare to the tv. Hang a shelf, over the sofa and a trailing plant and a few other decor items. I have not yet figured out the placement of the other sofa as I cannot see the rest of the room, I think it's one too many sofas in a small space. Perhaps another armchair would work there.

You have the smallest item in the room on the largest wall. Put the tv on the stair wall and put the sofa on the wall where the tv used to be.

After having lived in a row home, rearranging the room with the tv in every imaginable spot, we came up with a good arrangement. The TV across the window corner a little higher on a nice corner cabinet. Keeps the glare off the TV, and everyone can see it. Was the only arrangement the worked. Sofa to the other side of the room across from the window. Depends on how long that stairway wall is (we had about 10' to work with).

Some art the same size as the TV might look good on the wall behind it. If you can put the TV on the wall, you could devise an arrangement of paintings/ posters/ photos that would suit. Two artists whose work is relatively affordable and yet lovely are Colin Johnson (in Minnesota) and Callie Hirsch (in New York). I don't have links to their work, but if you google their names, you can see what I mean. Either would add some color to the room and some interest.

Your living room would benefit from a new space plan. If you rearrange your furniture a bit and add a larger system for your TV that includes shelving and/or hidden storage, you'll be able to create a more cohesive LR. I do virtual space planning, if you're interested.

Definitely put the tv on a much taller and wider wood chest or banquet and perhaps some warm color on the wall, too.

Here's a pic of the "tv stand" I got recently. Since then I have added two matching wingback chairs on either side to fill up more space.

Look through catalogues, decorating books and websites (like Ikea) for wall units/book shelves. That wall where the TV is I think is screaming like crazy for a great wall unit!

Next think artwork. What is your style of art? Do you prefer calm beach scenes with blues and tans? Or do you go full out modern with blacks, silvers and grays? Once you decide that, then you know the style to focus on for your room.

From what I can tell, it looks like you have a putty colored couch and a slate blue one in the foreground. I'd incorporate that slate blue in pillows, artwork, pottery. You actually could add another color too, maybe black? I can see what looks like an animal print rug, here's where picking up black can tie in the rug to the rest of the room. Or opt to get a new rug with the slate blue, putty, black in it.

When you do a little research to find out what your style is, then you'll be happy with the results.

I will suggest you make narrow, low shelves with shutter board, the whole width of the wall. It can be 2 or 3 shelves. Fix the top shelve the rite height for the TV an put it in the centre of the shelf. Cover the back of the shelve area to hide the electrical cords. Paintings or graphics can stand on the top shelve next to the TV, a high standing lamp (or 2 if you do it symmetrical) together with object`s d art, and books. The blue couch must be opposite the other couch with the chair facing the TV, next to the cream couch.

here are two ideas below - see floor plans. first one puts tv in corner, maybe shift arm chair a bit, then put some nice artwork (that you like) on the wall. second puts sofa up against wall and other sofa (or loveseat) up against window, then swing arm chair around. You can put up artwork above sofa. i prefer second idea, but i don't like to hang things above or around tv. good luck!

A little color on the walls is nice. I know wallpaper is back in style again, but it's a real pain to remove later when your color scheme or taste changes. I prefer artwork that is easily changed. Lots and lots of easy DIY ideas on Pinterest that can express your personality. Put something on your wall that makes you smile

I think you could use some drapes. I also think that T.V. and stand are way too small for that wall and that is why it looks so empty. Either rearranging your furniture as some others have suggested or getting a nicer and larger cabinet for the T.V. would be a good place to start.

So much solutions choose one

It is challenging to design a room around the TV, especially when you have a big window, as it limits where you can place the TV. You'll hate the reflection off the windows if you put it against the stairs (I speak from experience on that one). I'd rethink the balance in the room, since the long wall with the TV is really your anchor here. I'd put the TV on a sturdier, larger piece, something that fits that wall better. That piece, whatever you choose, should be the largest hard-case piece in the room, which means replacing the coffee table with something smaller. You may try moving your smaller sofa against the stairs and that awesome accent chair to under the window. A cool floor lamp (something modern) to balance the vase and a couple fun pieces on the wall. That metal "H" initial in the comments above is a neat idea, then a couple family/friends photos stacked on the opposite end would finish the look.

My first thought was a wall of built-in bookshelves, customed to your storage needs, with your TV in the center...floating shelves would work too. Drapes on the window (or is that a sliding door?), move couches across from each other in front of bookshelves (might have to get a smaller coffee table) and put chair where the darker couch is now, facing tv. It would require moving the couches away from the wall and window, creating a l_l with a smaller table in the middle. You can add a narrow sofa table behind the couch on the right, so you could walk behind it. Add some plants, lamp on sofa table, etc., to warm up the space. The room may or may not be big enough to pull that off, can't tell from the pic. Wallpaper is also a good artistic addition, esp if floating shelves are used. Short of moving tv and losing one of the couches and adding a second chair, it might work. If you keep the tv where it is (but a bit higher) you could lose a couch, parallel the couch across from wall and side by side 2 chairs with small side table in between. __ : My keyboard is not helping me get the idea across...lol...but hopefully you get the gist. Good luck with all of it! Everyone has some great ideas...it just depends on what works best in your space and for your needs.

looks like the tv is the most important thing in the room......like some kind of deity......LOL. Agree with the other posters; re-arrange the furniture!

My daughter has a very similar room which is open to the kitchen. The stairs are in the same place. She put up 3 mirrors and it made the room look so much bigger. Her TV is on the stair wall.

Lots of great advice. I like the arrangement that 'proudmomk', only I would look at a credenza that's more mid century modern looking (if that suits your taste). If you get something long it will serve as good storage and you may be able to eliminate the coffee table and move the sofas a bit to add more room or at least the appearance of more room. I would also suggest a brighter rug. I know people are hesitant about putting a rug on top of carpet, but if you rent, you get a pass. It would brighten up the room a bit or maybe add a nice pop of color. Some shears would look great on the windows but not block the natural light. In addition to adding a few pieces of art on the wall (pictures, the metal 'H' as TenCalGal showed [ that industrial look!!], interesting objects! etched...) with a credenza or media stand, you can put objects on either or both sides to add balance and design. I would love to see the outcome!!!

Proper proportion and spacing can enhance a rooms appeal. You can easily hire a professional online interior designer for a reasonable amount and get a diy plan for your space. You'll need to provide more information, details such as measurements and your budget for purchases.

I think my biggest concern here is the placement of that blue loveseat, which I think should go along the stair wall if space permits. I say this because I had a similar issue in our family room, and opening up that floor to our kitchen and dinette area made such a huge difference... everything feels so much more spacious and usable. If you feel incredibly attached to the single chair in that room, it can sit on an angle next to the beige couch similar to lgsiller's pic. A very economic solution to adding some spice would be to simply painting an accent wall behind the tv... you don't need to go all out and pick a crazy colour either, I think even just a shade or two darker from what you already have would make a difference.

Sorry one more thing... given your existing palette, I highly suggest playing with shades of yellow as an accent color. Pillows, a throw draped on one of the seats, vases, etc. I think it'll complement both the blue and beige pretty nicely :)

Adding crown molding -- the widest you can afford -- would help warm up the room, too. Don't forget what's overhead!

I'm guessing that your kitchen and/or dining area is across from the tv and you have it placed on the current wall in order to see it from those areas. If so the larger cabinet idea would certainly help, but you'll have to eliminate that bulky coffee table. How about a smaller acrylic one? Can you eliminate the table to the left? Agree with the suggestion of a somewhat darker color wall. If renting then add artwork, but nothing busy. If you're willing to move the tv you've got lots of good suggestions above. Maybe add pillows that incorporate the color of the carpet in deeper and lighter tones. Too many neutrals; need some color kick.

I like the suggestions about cornering the TV and rearranging the furniture, especially if that means you can get the sofa out from under the window -- maximizing the window will help the room feel bigger. If you want to keep the TV where it is, though, a nice shallow (12"D) credenza and a pair of tall shallow bookcases for either side wd be a good investment -- you can always reuse those pieces separately elsewhere as you go along. If you get paintable, all the better for changing their look eventually. You can fill them with books, attractively-packaged but necessary paperwork, and have fun buying different objects that add color and interest -- bookends, vases, plates and small framed artwork to perch at the back. To balance the wall, float a shelf or two above the TV for more of the same. I agree with those who suggested extra splashes of color, and that you don't want it to look like the TV is the only important thing in the room. When it is ON, of course it will be the focal point, no matter what you put around it, but for when it is OFF, you need something else to entertain the eye and de-emphasize the TV.

Adding your own art on the wall

you need to deal with the furniture arrangement before adding accents. lgsillers 2nd arrangement is exactly what I would have suggested. you should have your largest piece of furniture on the longest wall (in any room). the sofa on that wall would let you enjoy the view or just the light of the window. nothing should be placed blocking the window. the TV and stand that you have looks like it would fit perfectly on the stair wall. but really is lost on its current wall, which really gives it too much importance in the room.. you might want to put it on a higher stand that would also give you storage.

another option would be to flip that arrangement keeping the sofa on the back wall, the smaller sofa on the stair wall TV angled in the corner beside your window (less glare?) and face the chair for best TV viewing.

I think either way would make the room feel larger. saying that I'd ditch one of the couches myself, seems like too much furniture for the small space you have. I really like the chair maybe you could get another one instead of a couch?

when thats done find a large picture to place above the sofa bring in your favorite colors from that into the room with pillows, drapes and accessories. check out World Market, Pier One, Ikea and any other discount decorating stores.

Not every wall should be filled with art. The eye can absorb more beauty with time to process in the in-between space.

I agree with the suggestions to rearrange the furniture, get rid of one of the couches, and put the TV on a more substantial stand. Create a pleasing arrangement before even considering what to put on the walls. Take your time on your wall decor. A blank wall is better than cheap, generic "art" hastily acquired just to fill the space.

The question was how to make the room less bare and people are cavalierly suggested getting rid of couches! Funny.

First get a better media center. IKEA sells. Go a buffet type long 5-6' go a color or a light wood. Put pot with sticks on opposite corner. Add a floor lamp next to chair in that corner a big potted Palm. In a big ceramic pot. Pick a color. To fill bare corners. Putting TV on a taller chest will fill that wall also. Pick a accent color and add that to sofa in pillows.

Can you put TV on wall that chair is on. With a longer taller media. Move chairs so it's angled to look at TV. To right of sofa. On big wall add 2 floor mirrors from IKEA. 6' wide dark frames. Just lean with a 5" between them. Not expensive. Will give depth to room. Add floor lamp on end of sofa.

The glare on your TV suggests a total rearrangement of furniture. I know cables and wires are an issue but outlets can be moved so I would start with rearranging furniture. I can't see the other wall(s) in this room but would also suggest a larger TV stand if the new furniture arrangement could accommodate a larger piece.

Maybe all she was interested in was what she asked for: ideas re artwork for the wall rather than what furniture she should get rid of (?)
