Again Seysson, your opinion ONLY on no so called black Tomatoes, which I refer to as red/blacks if they have a yellow epidermis, such as Carbon or Black Krim and pink blacks if they have a clear epidermis such as Cherokee Purple or Indian Stripe or Black From Tula. to.

What is purple? No consensus on that at all, and it's more important these days with many varieties having antho shoulders or spots. The word purple was used up until perhaps the 30's to indicate a PINK tomato, so that unt Ginny's Purple, is pink for instance.

Very few varieties dohave a bit of true purple and Orange Smudge and Red fleshed Orange Smudge are examples.

You listedabove a Purple Heart and the Only true Purple Heart I know of was via the breeding efforts of someone in Germany whom I know well, who just released a purple, a green and chocolate heart, no, he doesn't sell seeds, and I was sent the seeds and they are being grown out this summer by my seed producers for my next seed offer elsewhere.

But you said Purple Heart (DWF) and for those who don't know what that means, it was one bred by members of the Dwarf Project at another site.

Yes, Purple heat is a new release from Dwarf Project. I think this is the first season offered to the general public.

This color of tomato is always my favorite, love the flavor. I'm growing Black Krim and Black from Tula. I'd like to grow more but I have a small garden.... This morning I was looking at my garden and deciding where I was going to plant everything, I have to find room for 10 tomato plants. If I follow the recommended spacing for tomatoes, I will not have room for anything else!!! Not to mention the drought and our governor demanding we conserve water. I can't argue with that. I might have to whittle down my tomato planting to 5 plants :(

If I follow the recommended spacing I cannot plant half as many. I space mine in average 18". Maybe 19". So a 19" by 19" square = 2.5 sqr-ft. per plant. that is 2.5 time space of square ft gardening.
So in a 3ft by 6ft raised bed I plant 7 plants (staggered). But I have to work harder to stake them and prune them. . I might not get huge production but I try many more varieties.

Ok. Back to Brown tomatoes.
I am thinking to add a Black Prince. BBS are selling the seedlings.
So what do you think about it ?

I'll try your spacing... I really want to squeeze them all in. I've already let go of the Hillbilly but gave it to someone who I'm sure I can get at least one tomato from so I can save the seeds. Black prince... I grew it once about 3 years ago but not since. It was one that showed up at a lot of the nurseries around here and then became scarce. I can't remember why I didn't save the seeds... I have this slight negative memory about prince, perhaps it bit the dust early on and so I never got to taste the tomatoes.
