almost looks like the drawer unit has no finish, a dark wax may lessen the lighter spot.

If this is a commercial product, it's almost certain it does not have "polyurethane" on it. Poly is a DIY product. Most likely it's a lacquer and probably a lacquer with a bit of color in it. Lacquer is mot common because it's fast to apply, fast drying, and easy to repair.

You can buy aerosol lacquer in most home centers, Deft is a common brand.

You may be able to restore the color by adding a bit of pigment. Since that will be hard for you to find, you could start with some artist's pencils in various shades. LIGHTLY scribble in some color, then smudge around with your finger. Err on the light side as the lacquer will darken. Spray on the lacquer lightly to lock it down. Repeat after it dries to sneak up on the color. If you have a more obscure area to run some trials on (e.g., bottom edge of drawer), that would be helpful.

Looks like ink spots. Could mineral spirit or denatured alcohol solve this problem? I read it once in some magazine. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.
