Salvia officinalis, garden sage. Nice plant. It is young, so you can certainly harvest from it this season but be sure to leave far more than you are taking. Sage gets much larger as a plant. So if you encourage that this season, you will see a wonderfully large and robust plant next season that will more than supply all your kitchen needs. This year, pinch out only the terminal buds. It will encourage bushy growth while giving you some sage for your recipes.

Thanks rhizo! Sage is definitely a hardy plant here in Indiana. I didn't protect it at all over the winter. The leaves got a little gray so I cut those off a few weeks back. I have noticed that it's getting so big now that it wants to lean to one side. I have it up against a trellis now but I might have to run a stick behind and tie it to hold it up. I'm sure it can't be too good for it leaning over on the ground

I threw a sage plant in a compost heap last fall and it won't die. They get quite large if you let them. It should be able to take care of itself without support.

Nice sage specimen! Rosemary looks like a odd pine tree & smell like it too. Will leave resin-not as bad as pine-when picked. I had a almost 15 year old sage that was about 3' tall & 3' around -the stem was about as thick as my wrist!
