Plum Tree Pruning Help

Hello

I pruned my 1 year old plum tree by taking a third off the main stem.

Since I have done this it hasn't grown at all. Not even a mil. I did this about 3 weeks ago when the leaves had just come out.

I have noticed that the first set of leaves have now started to go yellowish.

Can anyone help or is this normal. I also pruned some kind of suckers at the very base.

Can you post a picture? I wouldn't be worried by no visible growth in 3 weeks but the yellow leaves are interesting. And why did you feel it needed pruning? I seem to recall you also had trouble with a cherry. I wonder if you are doing something we don't know about yet which is affecting them.

    Hi

these are the pictures. I was told by a friend to cut the stem by 1/3 after the 1st year.

The pot it was in was half the size of the pot in the picture. So I re-potted it in the one in the pic. I didnt have any compost so I used last years remaining composted manure. Could this be the problem.

The new leaves are green and the other leaves of about 3 weeks old are turning yellow.

Do you think I need to re-pot it in new compost and do I need to prune the branches by 1/3.

It does seem very thin for an almost one year old.

Sorry if I sound stupid but im new at all this. In fact the branches look longer than the main stem LOL I think iv broken it lol

I do think the composted manure is a problem. Go to Homebase or somewhere and get a bag of John Innes No 3 and repot it. The size is not bad for 1 year old. I would leave it alone until it is established and then get a book on growing and pruning fruit in containers. Meanwhile read the link. Pruning Plums

BTW always prune stone fruit in the Summer here because of Silver Leaf disease. This is different timing from apples and pears.

Why are you trying to grow a plum tree in a container? Plums are fairly large trees and are meant to be grown in the ground. But if you don't mind all of that work, go for it.

Because I started from seed and wanted to give it every chance. I have now plated it in the garden but I did notice that the composted manure was saturated. Could that be why some of the leaves are yellowing. What shall I do about pruning or training it. Shall I just leave it inn the ground for another year. Im just worried that Iv cut too much of the stem down and one of the branches seems to be growing long.

Hi Julian - it gets worse and worse ;-) Not only was it in composted manure (bad idea) but now we discover it was saturated - so roots were not getting enough oxygen. It's better off and easier to care for it in the ground now but make sure you water it in well, even if it rains.

Since it's seed grown so there's no way of telling what any fruit might be like. Are you hoping for fruit or is this just an experiment?

WOW. I put a comment on here hoping for advice. This is just an experiment that's all. It is now in the garden where it will stay. In July im going to prune the side branches by 1/3rd and then leave it to it's own devices for another year and then have a look at pruning it again. I read about pruning after year 1,2 and 3 and am going to just carry on. The manure is now gone as I scraped it all off.

Julian - sorry if you misunderstood me. That's why I put the ;-) there. Just pulling your leg. As a fellow Brit I thought you'd get it. Sorry again.

Agree with rayrose...no pruning this year.
The yellowing could have also come from a waterlogged plant depriving from oxygen, ..loosening up the dirt a bit and re potting in sandy soil will help, [fruit trees don't like wet feet]....which means don't plant where the ground is waterlogged, causing roots to die off.
When planted in the ground and watered in,..just leave it alone for a couple of weeks,..if soil remains moist, don't water again.

Yes, human urine. You can find many discussions about it and
how well it works, furthermore it's free.
