something along the lines of something meant to hold magazines vertically (not stacked). you dont have to put magazines in it but you could.

that wont help having cords crossing the floor, thats another dilemma you need to work out.

I may have had too much coffee this morning, but perhaps a custom shelf like in picture one? I like the idea of a structured basket. Pier 1, TJMaxx and of course Amazon are good choices! You may have to hunt a bit. Be open to yard sales for unusual boxes you can refurbish with paint! Just keep a measuring tape in the car!

So obviously the pink elephant in the room is the former niche for a TV that is now serving as an electrical source for desk! Is this a temporary situation! Smile.

I thought these cut outs for TV were a bad idea at the time. My last home had one beside the fireplace but was a lot bigger so I could put a chair in it. I would put doors on it. The baskets are a good idea too. Show us pictures when you figure something out. I'm sure a lot of people have this same design dilemma.

If you are handy or have a budget, you could make a swivel-out desktop so that you could sit on the (radiator?) bench next to that piece and work at your computer. You could have shelving below the desktop that would hold all the supplies that are now on the trunk in front of the sofa. I like the shelf that miacometlady posted.
Overall thought--if it's the best source of electricity in the room, you might as well turn it into an attractive and useful charging station/desk area, because that's how it's going to end up being used.

You could install a shelf and add baskets/books, etc.

Shelving

I'd do firewood with cut ends showing... Fill the whole space. Shelves would be ok but may be a little busy depending on how you dress them.

The plug/extension cord is temporary. I use it to keep my electronics plugged in while working in the living room.
