We liked the niche with the cut logs. The verticality of the niche balances with the horizontal nature of the gas fireplace and adds texture and warmth to the room. We liked how the round shapes of the logs worked with the linear aspect of the stone. It's just a nice detail. We had lots of room for bookshelves and storage and didn't need this area to be 'functional'.
