Pickling Asparagus

For the first time this year I actually have more asparagus than we can eat fresh so I decided to try to pickle some. I looked thru the balls blue book and complete book of canning but did not have all of the ingredients on hand for the recipes so I decided to use some Mrs. Wages kosher dill mix I already had. I was using pint and a half jars so I processed for 15 minutes according to the instructions for pickling cucs in quart jars. The final product tasted OK though a little too much dill/salt but was rather limp and soft. What is the key to getting the asparagus to hold it's crispness? I have pickle crisp but did not think at the time to use any. I assume that would help some? What recipe do you recommend for my next attempt?
