Close up in the wall

When I'm picking paint I'm always surprised at how different the paint can look on my walls. I buy a sample and paint a big foot and half square and look at it different times of the day to make sure I still like it In different lighting. I've also had my paint mixed wrong and come home with the wrong color. Does the paint on the top of the can match the chip? Did you mix the paint completely?

Yes the paint matches the swatch! But looks different on my walls. So strange!!

It's the lighting then. I would take that chip and go look for a chip with less blue in it.

Putting on a second coat can make a big difference too… That looks like it might be a light one-coating where you can see some of the lighter wall speckling through. Has it dried thoroughly?

That small area I painted is a light painting but color is the same as the area I painted with two coats.

Is is the same as the biggest area of color painted on the L side of the fireplace (when facing it)?

Grays are very difficult. They all seem to have a blue, red, or yellow undertone. After a lot of searching for a neutral gray, I found Benjamin Moore Sculpting Clay, 4th from the left. If it's too dark for you, Classic Silver (3rd over) was nice, too. You can have the paint store cut the tone by half. Many people recommended Revere Pewter (by the stone, 2nd down) but I thought it was too tan.

I think part of the problem is that you haven't finished painting the entire space, and you are painting on top of a color that has yellow undertones-the old paint color could be throwing you off. Also, your mantel looks ivory instead of white. Why don't you get a large white poster board and paint the color on it and then place that up against your wall and see if you like it. Coventry Gray does seem to have a lot of blue in it, but may end up looking really nice with the stone on your fireplace. If you are looking for a very neutral and warm beige, try Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore-someone may have already suggested that color. Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your input! I love revere pewter and might paint that in the living area but I wanted something different for the dining room. I don't mind a grayish blue, but I thought the coventry gray looks more blue than gray. I want more than gray than blue! I agree that maybe the cream walls are throwing me off. The mantle hasn't been painted yet. It's still bare wood. I have apparition to the left but I feel the stone on the fireplace gets lost with such a neutral color.

"the problem" with the HC colors is they arent in graduated tone strips the way the other paint colors are. generally you can look at the bottom of the strip and see what the paint would look like in the shadows, much easier to assess the undertones that way.

I had the same experience when trying samples over a previous beige (with gold undertones) paint color. I think that is what is making it look so blue. Also, the room where I painted the samples has north facing windows which also really cools colors off.

Mick how would you describe the classic silver color. Looks pretty!

Coventry gray is a beautiful colour. I have it in my master bedroom and en-suite in my current home and am working on painting the new home we are moving into with the same colour...it actually matched the wallpaper I chose for our new bedroom perfectly. Go figure! Anyways, I suggest you paint the entire wall with 2 coats before you decide against it. Yes it has blue undertones but it is a nice gray against white trim once its fully painted out. The next colour down on your swatch is Stonington Gray and it is also beautiful with less blue undertones...I have 3 rooms in my current house painted in that one and I love it. Good luck!

Love_design, I liked classic silver! It is also a fairly neutral gray. I just wanted a little darker gray, which sculpting gray is. The large areas are painted Cloud Mountain, cut in half with white.
