Sprucing up house to sell

We are in the process of readying our house to put on the market. Taking care of painting etc. The most recent endeavor was to pull off the carpet runner on our main stairs with the intent of putting a new one on. The big question is what is more appealing for resale...carpet runner or plain stairs? The treads are in good condition just slight color difference where the carpet was vs not but the backs will need a bit of sanding and repainting to make them presentable. I think no carpet makes the enclosed staircase look brighter & bigger, husband thinks the runner is a "classier" look. Thoughts?
