Mango tree flowered but no fruit

Hi Guys!

I'm here again, looking for help with my mango tree. I had a post last year about it (http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/2187588/help-with-mango-tree).

At the end of June it will be 1 year since we've move into this house. Last year, but that time, there were plenty of fruits on our tree. As a matter of fact, we remember seeing it start to fruit when we first saw the house, around April (last year).

This year, I was expecting to see fruit by now, but there's nothing. We did see flowers coming out around Feb/Mar, but they seem to have all fallen off, and there is no fruit anywhere in sight. Is our tree sick? Does it need fertilizer? I have no idea how old it is (by the size, it looks young).

There are two things I should mention.

1) About a month ago, or a little more, we noticed a lizard on the tree, similar to this one - but it has since moved on (we saw it on another tree in our back yard):

2) Around the tree, about 3/4 feet, there is a circle with some plants/bushes, and mulch. A couple of months ago (don't remember exactly if it was before or after the tree produced flowers) we applied weed killer to clean up the area - not very smart, I know, especially close to a fruit tree)

Could any of these two items caused the tree not to be producing fruit?

I took some pictures at the end of the day yesterday, maybe someone can spot something wrong with it?

The last year photos showed a great looking tree. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe its a seedling tree that bears in alternate years?

Mango trees in FL have been mixed this year...I've heard of areas where their trees are very prolific and bloomed/fruited quite well for them...me on the other hand and many that I've read and spoken to is having a bad mango year... my mango blooms on 4 out of 6 trees were attacked with Powdery Mildew fungus and most of the blooms fell off...then shortly after a "hard freeze" temps around 30 degrees fried the few blooms that survived...so I have a very on my trees this year. I have more on my potted Glenn than I do on my large inground trees :o(...a VERY sad year for me...

I would go with Pug and say,its just a off year for fruiting. That tree is in perfect condition. I wouldn't prune an inch of it.
Did you ever post what variety? Or what the fruit look like?

Mangos by nature are biennials and are most productive every second year, all thing being equal. Of course what can make it "unequal" is weather (especially since you're in marginal climate for them), and insects and pathogens. I know here there are some grasshoppers that like the flowers and if they descend in large numbers during flowering time the consequences can be quite significant. A lot of rain or too much moisture can also cause flower drop.

Well, I was talking with my wife, and she said the flowers dried out and did not just fall off as I first stated.

About the moisture. I think I did increase the amount of water the tree gets from the sprinklers. My front yard has only two big sprinklers (I am planning on changing this as time permits), and until a few months ago (I would say, 6 or so), one impact and another regular but big sprinkler. I changed the setup so that now there are two impact sprinklers similar to this one. Since the tree is in the center, and each of the sprinklers are on the outer edgers they kind of cross each other a little bit in the center, and I think the tree is getting water from both of them. I am going to check this out tonight, and adjust as necessary.

I was worried that the tree was sick, or damaged by the weed killer we put around it. But from all your comments, I am gathering that this could be a normal cycle for it, or too much moisture. I have not noticed any other type of insects or anything else there. BTW, I am in Boca Raton, FL.

you said the flowers "dried out".. that means the tree isn't getting a lot of water.. it's not because too much moisture.. you gave the answer to yourself already =) haha, that's been my problem too this year.. but all my trees are on a slope.. I have two 4GPHs flag drippers (one on the left, one on the right), I do about 10-15 minutes every other day.. but that still isn't enough for some of the trees..

I bought a few of these (about 10) and will change some of the ones to test it out.. the black one of course =)
