Colonial curb appeal

I love the inside of our home, but have never loved the way it looks on the outside. The left side of the home was built originally in 1942, and the ride side was added on sometime after that. Although the attached garage is practical, it doesn't do much for our curb appeal.

I am looking into resurfacing the driveway, and also updating the shutters. The ones up now are cheap plastic and too narrow for the window size. My questions are;
- What shutter style would you use? The traditional louvered style most colonial homes have, or should I simplify the look with the shaker style 2-panel shutters? I'm thinking of having them painted a very dark green - almost black.
- Should we paint the garage door? The same dark green as the shutters?
- Any other solutions to give this place more curb appeal?

I feel like I want to lessen space between garage doors and windows by adding something, see pictures. I'm not convinced second pic is any good, but if it were it would have to have same roof as original house.

I like color for door but leave garage white. Planters by door and brown mulch on gardens.

I agree with miacometlady about the shutter style, and some planters next to the front door. However, I think you should paint the garage door dark green as you proposed - it would look more polished. You might also consider flower boxes for the windows over the garage with some cascading plants.

Paint the shutter the dark green and the door in a complimenting shade of dark tan or beige. If the door is painted in the dark green color- it will look as bad as the white does now and drag the eye to the dark space on the right side rather than highlight the beautiful front porch.

Use any shutter style other than louver!!! I feel the largest distraction is the massive size of the garage door so I would try not to draw attention to it by painting it a powerful color. My best suggestion would be a new natural wood color garage and front door. Of course that idea carry substantial cost. I seem to agree all of miacometlady's suggestions. There is to much space between the top of the garage door and the widows above.
