As I just typed before seeing your picture, an area rug, wall art and window treatments will finish the space without cluttering up the open floor plan, but you already have the wall art and window treatments, you smart person! :-) That leaves the area rug, and to be practical, get something that can be washed! It will need to be 48" bigger than the size of your table to allow 24" of chair pullout all around.

I'm renting right now so would like to keep things simple. I hate the light above the table but it has to stay. As you can see I moved the brown table from under the large brown picture to under the painting. It was just to see what it would look like. I realize it leaves a big empty spot under the big brown pic but that's what I need suggestions for.

I think the mirror could be a bit higher with a storage unit under it. Patterned roman shades for the windows might be something to consider.

What a pretty room and your new table and chairs are great. I love the console under the art. Agree you shouldn't block the art, try a lower vase. I would put a small, narrow dresser under the mirror and you could use it for toy storage.

Such a pretty room. My only suggestion would be to find an area rug to ground your space. An area rug with light blue and beige in it would be beautiful. Also, a natural, jute rug would look great and very casual.

I am going with Lila in placing a dresser under the mirror to use for toy storage. Place the tall vase of flowers instead on the dresser to block part of the mirror. That will add interest. Also go with a simple area rug such as sisal or a flat woven rug which will be easy to keep clean. Size the rug as sooz001 suggested. Roman shades or even soft side panels at the windows will also dress the room up more than just using blinds. It is a lovely space & I love the table & chairs as well as the art you have chosen.

Draperies and a nice size rug would be my recommendation.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think a jute rug with a navy border would be nice. I'm on the hunt. Also wondering what you all think of a console table under the mirror with some additional seating ottomans for when we use our table leaf. Or maybe a seating bench? I'll attach pics. Input please! I like the idea of a console with benches. Get benches with storage.

I would put down a round area rug under the table and chairs. I would put a large faux tree in the corner by the windows. I would not use either of those vases with the flowers in them. I'm not a fan of mix and match chairs, but if that's what you're doing then I would put matching decorative pillows on the two larger chairs. I would find something nice to put on the round table. Lastly, as with all decorating, I would pick a style .... a very traditional, more formal accent table does not match with more casual ratan chairs ... so I would try to find another piece of furniture to take the place of that accent table since it seems like you're going to stick with that table and chairs if they're new. And I would make that piece more functional ... whether you decide to use something you can close the drawers on (to hide kid stuff) or an open shelf style if you can make it pretty while being functional. But whatever it is, it needs to make sense ... putting a random table somewhere that serves no purpose makes no sense.

I think your artwork needs to be vertical! It's too tight in that spot horizontally.

Are jute rugs easy to clean? I don't know much about them, but I know I wouldn't want something under the table that couldn't be cleaned easily.

I would not recommend a jute rug for under a dining table. I had one and before it was a week old one of my kitties tossed her "cookies" on it and stained it. Even taking it out and hosing it down didn't remove the stain. Luckily I got a great deal so the loss wasn't terrible, but I was not happy about it.
I highly recommend a polypropylene indoor/outdoor rug. I have slowly replaced all our rugs in areas where the kitties have access to them and I love them. We take them outside each spring and fall to clean them with the power washer and let dry in the sun. They don't fade either. I got all mine from Overstock. Look closely at the photos to make sure it's woven with no nap.

I agree with justgotabme about jute. I have an expensive pottery barn jute rug. It stains easily and stains will not come out. I also agree about hanging the art vertically. Then place your vase to one side. The console table could be used for a little buffet or a drink station when entertaining. It could be painted lighter. Nice start on your room.

Just a note re a rug generally. They do tend to make spaces look smaller, so given the space that might be a consideration as well.

I'm sorry, though I expected, to hear I'm not the only one that has had bad luck with a jute rug staining.

As for the art, it appears jhampton likes large scale art. Not only that, but just because it's abstract doesn't not mean it's necessarily okay to turn it on it's side if there is a signature. Or if you know, or are, the artist. To the unknowing eye it could very well work, I too agree a portrait hung piece would work better in that space, but it might not be the "right" thing to do for this particular work of art.

I love that they are reasonably priced (so they can be changed out) and that my cats love them. They scratch the jute rugs instead of the furniture! If you are placing a jute in a place where you may have a lot of spills, I would definitely reconsider.

Have you considered painting the wicker chairs blue and adding seat cushions to the chairs and curtains in classic tan and blue at the window with a woven carpet under the table .

the colours that I am showing are not exactly complementary to each other but I think you get the general idea.

The flowers on the buffet and table are too tall.

PS you could add a complementary colour yellow or coral etc.

Thanks guys, I'm going to do done rearranging and post some more pics. Funny about the tall flower vase. It was actually in the center of the round table and I just moved it and put it by the art to get it out of the way. No plans on keeping it there

I love the mix of chairs and table. I think it adds personality to the room to mix it up like that.
