I'm a fan of leaving cedar alone, untreated. I like the look of well patinated cedar. Not everyone does, so if you do want to stain, I recommend using a waterborne oil stain, such as the products made by Broda. I tend to pick one that has minimal tint so that you're getting the UV protection without seriously impacting the colour of the natural cedar. I like how the waterborne oil gets absorbed into the cell structure of the cedar, rather than just coat it. This translates to making life easier down the road when you need to re-stain because the finish doesn't peel or flake, necessitating a lot of surface prep before applying new stain. The waterborne oil is absorbed into the wood, so there is nothing on the surface to flake or peel. I don't know what brands are available to you in your location, but if you can locate Broad, or any other product that is a waterborne oil, I'd recommend you go that route.

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately it looks as if Broda isn't sold in the U.S. as far as I can find. Some of the ones in my area are Cabot, Wolman F&P, Minwax, Thomsons Seal (I've had bad experiences with Thomsons so I stay away from it). I'll look for something with a oil based to treat it. Nice deck. If let untreated, cedar will definitely turn to weathered grey over time. A clear, oil-based stain will preserve the natural cedar color. Your choice depends on the look you want. Maltby Design offered good suggestions. Penofin is another good brand. A local paint/hardware store may offer brands, not available at big box stores, that work well in your climate.

Thanks Derk. From what I can tell on Penofin's website the specific blend for cedar is restricted in New Jersey, and a lot of other states. They do have the Penofin Verde brand along with Ultra Premium but I cant tell if they're recommended for outdoor. The local Benjamin Moore store sells their blend of Arborcoat along with Cabot Timber Oil.

I think BM has a waterborne oil for exterior use but can't recall the name. Check with your local BM retailer, they should be able to advise.
