Are you the renter? Because they drive me crazy too! I would carefully remove and store them (maybe in the back of the closet) and replace them with pretty curtains. When you move out, you can reconnect them and no one will know!

What are your bifold doors made of? The ones I have can be taken off (fall off). They can be painted with a roller. I suppose they could be sprayed as well.
Take a look at the NANA wall site. Their doors are designed for exterior openings, but the style is great.

Could you put in sliding closet doors at your own expense? I have had them in some apartments. They do seem "sturdier" if all the hardware is installed correctly.
I did not like the sliding doors only because I could open just half of the closet space at one time.

Thanks for suggestions: I plan to move this Aug. so dont want to invest in something I would have to leave behind (in lease). I guess sliding door would work but would only be able to open one side at time as you noted. I am keeping suggestions for next place though I keep fingers crossed I can find a " reasonable" house to rent with small yard (have dog). thanks again.
