If you leave the climber alone now, it is going to continue growing longer until it eventually bends and forms laterals. The downside is you won't have multiple canes from the stock. If you prune the maiden shoot back now to one or two buds, they should break into growth so you should have at least limbs growing from the inserted bud. It's your choice. Kim

You're welcome. There are numerous buds in the union between the two pieces. This is the genesis of the "bud union". Pruning it back to a very short length should trigger new "basal breaks". If you leave it longer, often there will be a few branch triggered an inch or more from the stock, which still leaves you with a "one cane wonder", which then branches off the initial (maiden) cane. It will be fine and there are other opportunities to "fix" what you feel isn't exactly how you want it to be. You're welcome! Kim, you are right about it being hard - all that nice new growth but I also prick my other seedling (dahlias) when they are babies and I suppose roses are no different. I think I was just hesitant with this one because it is a climber, Santana actually. Will keep you posted.

That's completely understandable. We are all "virgins" at everything once. We worry about the first child, the first dog or cat, the first rose, dahlia, orchid, etc. and why wouldn't we worry about the first newly budded plant? We don't want to kill or otherwise injur it, but by the time you have the second child, second dog, second rose, you don't worry about them because you've learned they're going to thrive in spite of you!
